How many fans is to many fans?

Any, ideally.

Got 2 x 1000 RPM 120mm Nexus in my case though. Also 135mm in the PSU, 120mm 600rpm GPU and 120mm 600-1100RPM on the CPU

If I can hear them, there are too many.

Up to a point it's beneficial to add more fans at a very low speed, but too many and they become too loud.

I'm always surprised at the apparent obsession people have with cooling HDDs. As far as I recall I have never read anything which conclusively said that hot HDDs was bad. In fact the only reputable report dealing with subject was a BBC news article quoting Google who said heat had zero impact on HDDs. Google of course run thousands of them and know what they are talking about. So too many is probably when you've got a fan "dedicated" to your hard drives.

can anyone explain the difference between negative pressure and positive
i have a HAF 932 and air come out all sorts of funny places

Positive pressure is when you have, say... 5 intake fans and 2 outake fans. This means you have more air being sucked into the case by the 5 intake fans, than is being blown out by the 2 outtake fans. The effect of this is to create positive pressure inside the case... in effect there is too much air being blown in so some needs to escape. It escapes through the vents in the case which you can feel coming out.

Negative pressure is the opposite of this, for example 5 outtake fans with 2 intake fans. More air is being blown out of the case than being sucked in, so air is pulled in through the vents to make up for this.

Some people use positive pressure, others use negative pressure.

I use positive pressure as it stops dust from being sucked in through the vents which can make an open case like your HAF 932 or my HAF 922, which move a lot of air, very dusty. I have dust filters on all of my intake fans so all the air being sucked into my system is filitered on its way in.

i thought it was funny how the removable front grills or the side vents never get dusty but the front fan gets filthy lol

If you count everything, I'm going to have 10:

5x120mm, 3x140mm, 1x92mm on graphics card and a 140mm in PSU.

What about the ones in your PSU and graphics card?

Aha! When I saw the thread title I knew you'd pipe up!! :D

I'm on 4 in total, 1 in the PSU, 2 92mm and 1 120mm, and that feels like too much at times. :p
My psu fan is virtually silent, as for my graphics card, ignore the gtx 280 in my sig, im currently rocking a 7300gt as my gtx 280 is off for rma.

Bah!
Including your GPU and CPU fans isn't what the OP intended. When you think how many wheels your car has do you include the steering wheel and the spare?
Obviously we are talking about case fans! Otherwise I can claim the electric fan sat on top of the case to keep me, the Leeds UTD fan , cool. That's two more.

BTW: I'm on 2 front & 2 side intake Yate Loon 120mm's + 1 rear & 2 top exhaust Yate Loon 120mm's + 1 Hiper 80mm behind the cpu. That makes 8 case fans. No GPU, CPU, steering wheels included.

6 case fans and 6 system fans, do i win for total number of fans?

2x80mm + 120mm input, same as output.

2 PSU fans (92mm), 2 CPU fans (120mm), 2 GPU fans(92mm)

Btw they all run at sub 1000 rpm so it's fairly quiet. I could put another 80mm on the gpu and 3x40mm on the mobo but i don't see any need to.

SS FTO1: five fans, 2x180mm intake rear-front providing +air pressure / 1x120mm intake front cooling two harddrives / 2x120mm in push-pull config cooling H50 radiator rear of case.
My temps ave 35'c>39'C = CPU / 5870 = 33'c (room temp = 22'c), over all my system is very quiet the only thing l hear is the dvd-rw spin up :) and my case is right next to me.
