is it worth having 4hdd's in raid0?

i currently have 2x wd5000aaks drives in raid0 is it worth adding more and will it be any faster?

I thought you could only have 2 disks in RAID-0??? You can have as many RAIDs as you like .. spo in your example 2xRAID-0 (4 disks). I maybe corrected here.

I would run Raid 5 (mirror/stripped)

No, I wouldn't add any more, although if you did it would have a faster Average read, but (because you have added another 2 HDDs) it will not be twice as fast as your 2 x HDDs in RAID0...but 2 x WD 500GBs AAKSs in RAID0 will probably be giving you around 140MB/s anwway, which is fast.

No, because if you look 1 HDD, you will loose ALL *** data on your RAID0 array...no redundancy...

This would be a good idea, however, not on the ICHxR controller, reads will be fine, but because there is no hardware support for parity calculations writes will be slow.

For RAID5 you really need a true hardware card, something from Areca, 3 ware etc, but these are expensive, you could get something cheaper around £100 for a 4 port card, but these will also be "software" and will not give full potential.

I don't think 2 x (2HDDs) RAID0 is a good idea, I would be inclined to use another HDD for backups..:)

Id suggest googling something like "is raid 0 worth it".

Some pretty careful testing suggests no, and for some users it can actually slow you down depending what you do.

Best read for yourself.

well tbh this is more for a boot drive if i cba selling my 2x 500gb hdd's id buy 2x raptor x's for raid0 as i have a backup hdd, its purely for speed
