I just got my Virgin 20mb installed yesterday and the first thing I tried was joining a game of tf2 and seeing what my ping was...

I was rather disappointed :( lowest ping on one server was around 35 and other servers up to 40-50 :(

Did a traceroute to google and got 15 hops :/ Mate of mine on Jersey only has 11 hops and 6 of those are on Jersey itself!

What do other virgin users get?

My BE connection at my old flat was a lot better :(

well google has a range of servers, also, are you google.com-ing and him .co.uk?

well I got to a bbc router of 212.58.239.58 in 11 hops and then just a lot of time outs. Although the first 2 hops of that are my internal routers.

hmm im not quite sure what your asking about hops is relevant to your poor gaming experience

Where was the TF2 Server located?

Do you have this problem with all TF2 servers?

Were you experiencing any network delay, jitter, loss when playing TF2, i.e. was it lagging?

I personally use VM, but only play games occasionally but havent experienced any problems myself?

you best bet would be to get the ip of the TF2 server your having problems rather than google or bbc

Hops won't affect your ping. What's between the hops does.
a ping of 30-50 is fine and un-noticable in game. Most of that latency is processing latency at the server end rather than the links between. You'll see this if you host a LAN server. Pings to the IP are <1ms but in game ping can go from 2 or 3ms up to 10-15ms depending on the complexity of what the server is doing regarding maps, players speed of players connections etc.

Whilst hops dont directly mean that Ill have a higher ping, the more hops you have, the more crap youve got between you and the server youre trying to connect to :/

I mean they could have 6 different hops all located within 2 meters of each other... but what would be the point in that!

The servers I tried are located in London and Im only about 40-50 miles away so there shouldnt be that much between me and a server :/ unless Im being routed halfway round the country?

If it's a UK server then that's pretty poor.
I've once or twice hit single figure for a UK server, but I usually sit in the 10-15ms range.
US servers is usually 40-50ms going up to 100ms.

Aye :/ at my last flat I was able to get some nice low pings on empty servers down to 4-5 and on average my latency 10-25 on full servers.

I know its fine for gaming and wont make that much of a difference but I cant help being disappointed after years of gaming and seeing people on cable connections getting silly low pings :P

to be honest, im not a massive gamer, but i do occasionally game, and ive never had a problem, this is on VM.

But ive never been bothered about having a <10ms ping, it is always <30ms or thereabouts though

Yeah :/ I mean its not the end of the world but its disappointing nonetheless!

Dont understand why my data needs to go through 15 different things just to get to a google server lol

Im sure my old BE connection was like 7 or 8. I did a traceroute from work this morning on our BE connection and it was 9 hops from here.
