How many of you have surge protectors or UPS'?

Got a surge protector on my pc's after last year a power surge blew my main pc, learnt my lesson the hard way.
£20 compared to £900 is a bargain!!.

Although yesterday we had a big storm here and it looks like its blown my ethernet port, but the ethernet cable wasnt plugged into any protection, just straight into the port.

I have both a APC UPS and a SurgeMaster extension after I nearly got caught out last year when I was restoring a backup and a few minutes later suffered a power cut.

Luckily for me that it didn't happen while I was in the middle of the operation

I've also suffered a brownout (I think) where the lights flicker for a second or 2 but my UPS 'kicked in' and stabilised the power to my PC so no harm was done.

I have an APC UPS + Surgemaster for main computer and a Belkin UPS + Surgemaster on 2nd computer. This is simply as I live out in the country electricity goes off a number of times per year, due to lightening, high winds etc, and I also have RAID0 on one computer, so if that had electricity suddenly cut, I would probably loose the complete array.

Both USPs have software to automatically shut down open/running programs, shutdown Windows and then shut of the UPS. I must admit the system I have works well and I have not lost anything through loss of electricity. :)

f you're like me and you have many machines running 24 hours per day it's absolutely loony not to have a few UPSes. They're so cheap these days that I see little need to not have them.

Yes i have a surge protector for all my PC stuff, not sure where it actually came from though, it kind of just appeared in my room as i was building my PC last year :p
I will also be getting one for my HDTV/PS3 when i buy them.

we had a brown out, (low power) a while ago, and my computer broke, the sound card went first, funny noises, the psu stopped working, and that was it, time for a new pc lol! still havent got round to buying a protector!

That's the real PC killer (brown outs) which I doubt PSUs can handle :(

I have both, i.e. surge protector adaptor & UPS. The latter can handle surges/spikes, power-outtages & most importantly brown-outs

I have a surge protector as last year we kept having power cut offs that kept blowing the fuse in my PSU cable. Was quite annoying. Glad i had one yesterday with the big thundersotrm we had.... heard 2 people were seriously injured :(

Ive got one of the belkin 8 way protectors.

I also heard about the injuries in stoke, where were they/ I swear i saw a house get struck over fenton/fenpark area as i can see quite a long way from where i am at the top of sandford hill

Thunderstorm surge blew a fuse on my DFI Lanparty Nforce 2 Ultra once.

3 Weeks of RMA hell made me go out and buy a quality Surge Protector.

i use two apc ups 1000 for all my gear, got them for free so i had no complaints. Seen what can happen when you dont have a ups in companies i do IT for so better to be safe than sorry

Never seen the point of surge protectors myself

In theory they should be a good investment, but seeing as I have never had any surge in all the properties I have lived in (rental, student accom and owned) that ever harmed any of my kit, maybe i am just charmed lol

UPS on the other hand, I will be getting shortly even though I havent ever bothered before - as I am going xfire and raid I want to be doubly sure the supply is perfect.

I had never thought about a UPS being crucial on a raid setup as somone just mentioned but it certainly sounds a potential source of losing the array.

Yep 2*UPS's connected to an 8-way belkin surgeprotector which is checked daily. After losing a server machine at uni to a power surge, I take no chances now.

If the surge strip contains MOV devices, they may burn out after a couple of strikes. If your strip doesn't have an indicator to tell you if they are still working, you may not be protected. (...this is different to the neon telling you it's plugged in)

A UPS is always better, many server sites only use stuff from APC/Powerware - not actually seen a Belkin.
