How many of you upgrade just because you can?

Wind looks strong but the breakers seem to be rather close to shore. I prefer them far out where you can do a manly maneuver ;)

I think we have gone rather off topic :D

Edit: Look for me in the Bodyboarding Championships, im the guy with all the abs that the girls are looking at ;) jks! :p

Just a bit!!

There were some further out, but not as frequent as the ones already in the water wanted.

I have to pay a lot of rent on a very nice house, I go on a good holiday once or twice a year, have been with my girlfriend over 5 years so planning on getting married and having children.

I wish I could afford all the amazing things some people can :( but I love it. My consoles and my 'browser pc' will do for now.

:)

This is why I buy my self nice stuff while I still can ;p.

I used to upgrade all the time but my last upgrade was from a Q6600 to an i5 3570 so quite a while but having a family now and this bloody recession thing ive not been able to spend as much as I would like to on computer equipment.

Hell Im still using 2 22inch 1050 monitors :(

I upgrade as in replace something if something breaks, starts to struggle or I get a new game etc which needs more power. I upgrade as in add something if I need it, or occasionally as a treat.

I almost never upgrade a component just for the sake of having a newer/better one. Parts of my rig are between 2 and 4+ years old, and I've added a couple of parts along the way (HDD, fan, new monitor) but only replaced one (second hand 8800GT died)

lol, I replaced my 8800GT a little while ago also. Great little card. Had the 1gb Alpha Dog Edition. What a trooper!

I built my PC when living at home. I bought a nice new 24" LED monitor and thought, 'would be nice to build a new PC for it', so I did. Much different now.

This is what started me thinking this a few years back I upgraded to the latest cpu/vga on release just because I could now I have 3 kids and another on the way I am having a hard time justifying the money. yesterday I was eying up the 3570k on offer with 8gb ddr3 and a new board but missed the offer anyway but in a way I am probably glad as I don't seem to game as obsessively now due to having a young family and to be fair my system ([email protected]/4GB dd2/5850) has yet to be brought to its knees. So I am now in a constant flux of eying up new builds and thinking do I need it.

From reading this I'm glad to see I'm not the only one in the cant justify an upgrade boat. All the singles with no dependants seem to have all the fun. When it comes to the end of the month after standing costs I have little over £300 to spend... However when I have that £300 and I'm thinking about something shiny I suddenly become acutely aware of how little money that is and then I start thinking about the kids or something in the house that needs repaired or replaced. This is when I clear my basket here and promise myself I'll buy something shiny next month. Next month I go through the same process.

At least I can dream.

I did buy a couple of ssd's when they were going for crazy money a few months back. I don't seem to game as much and I have a HUGE steam list now so really my current system should last me years but I still crave a upgrade.

I upgrade because I get the itch. All it takes is one game that hooks me (usually multiplayer for it to catch) that doesn't run particularly well, and I start hanging out in GFX to see what's happening with new releases, framerates, etc. I start researching a card, I find the one that I would buy if I had the cash. At this point, buying a new card is something I'm going to do, it's just a matter of convincing myself. Sometimes my gf doesn't even put up a fight and then I'm screwed.

Next thing I know I have a new card that I never set out to buy. It all starts with a demanding program. Or a particularly hot piece of new hardware that I start reading about.

I waited for 5years before recently upgrading to my recent build.Went from a duo and 8800gt to a 3570k/gene/670.

That should last for a good while. Only thing on horizon this year might be a watercooling my ft02 and maybe another monitor. Although, still trying to justify it tbh. It can get expensive and have trouble justifying the outlay.

Indeed, I switched to a GTX 460 which was obviously faster, but considering I bought the 8800GT second hand for <£50 from an auction website (just as a stop-gap when building the PC and unable to afford the GPU I wanted) I was impressed by how good it was and how long it lasted. It was old when I bought it, but still ran everything I was playing at the time on medium/high. It died at just the right time, allowing me to upgrade when it was starting to struggle (although I suppose it could have been BECAUSE it was starting to struggle).

Only upgrade when l have to, my i7 920:4.2GHzPCis nearly 4 years old and only upgraded the GPU over this period. It still kicks but, l'm waiting to see how Haswell will perform and will decide then whether to upgrade to it or just upgrade the GPU.
