Evening all

Just curious to see how many people these days have started using a VPN and what service they use. It seems to be quite a popular thing to do for watching tv series etc in different countries but i have been toying about the idea of signing up to one. I have nothing to hide but just with the way the internet is these days i cant help but feel a little insecure even just browsing espacially if i use my laptop in a public wifi area

Just wondered how people find these VPN services and if they actually slow your connection down at all?

Cheers guys

I always use SOCKS/VPN when I'm using public WiFi. :)

A cheap VPN service might not let you saturate your connection. Latency should not be too bad.

I also use VPN to get back to my network without opening up ports in my router and when I'm on public wifi.

Use poptop pptp VPN on my tomato router for iOS devices and openVPN also on the router for everything else (mainly because work block the pptp port, and also because using openVPN is very simple)

Cheers for the input guys, i have a billion router that supports PPTP does this mean i can vpn into my LAN from any machine?

Assuming it is a PPTP endpoint and not just pass-thru yes. If it is just Pass-Thru you will need to configure a VPN server/endpoint on another machine and forward on the appropriate ports.

I think its just a pass through so i would have to setup my main machine as the VPN server but im not 100% sure. The 7800n may be able to act as the VPN server im just a little confused with the whole VPN thing if i am honest im kinda new to understanding it

Im the same as you both, i have no real need for one at home i dont download anything just mainly online gaming so i dont fancy increasing my latency for no real reason. I just use a lot of public wifi areas and wanna be extra safe if i ever have to transfer money etc as you never know these days.

Would anyone be able to recomend a cheap reliable vpn service?
