Im just curious. How many servers do you manage and how many in your server team?

We seems to have increased about about 100 servers in the last 18 months, but our team has actually got smaller.

20 physical, 100 virtual and nearly 1000 users (across multiple sites - a plane ride away) and the entire IT department consists of 5 people, with never any more than 3 on site at any point in time.

And management thinks they spend too much on IT!!

25 physical, 10 virtual. 10 of us in IT, however only 2 of us are dedicated to infrastructure . The rest are development/qa/dbas

Over 85 physical and more than 160 on VM's on just one of our 5 domains across 8 sites inc South Africa and Cairo, with around 4000+ users and there is 5 inc me in the server support team.

Directly, I am responsible for/support about 100 physical servers, approximately 500 virtual machines and somewhere in the region of 50 routers and around 100 switches. 1,000 users, $1bn revenue. Team of 7.

I'm also part of a wider global team supporting several hundred servers, over 4,000 virtual machines, hundreds of routers and switches and more besides. 10,000 users, $3bn revenue, team of 60ish.

3 of us in our infrastructure team, supporting 9 ESX hosts running 155 virtual servers, about 20 phsyical, 3 SANs, entire infrastructure basically ... won't give us any more staff and our helpdesk guys are too useless to step up to the game.

About 600 servers in total for around 11k staff (6000 users in A/D) and there's 6 of us in the server team

MW

Not "responsible" for any, but have input on strategic planning and day to day stuff for 4 physical and one virtual server, 200 users, 1 staff member actually responsible, external IT company on retainer.

170 servers (140 VM, 30 Physical) - Primary and DR sites (1 SAN at each)

1200 users

3x IT Server Infrastructure Staff

9 "Server" guys (including me)
3 "Network" guys

1000+ server estate around 50/50 Windows/Linux split. Around 7-8k staff and another 25k for students.

Curious, what uni do you work for?

For the people with larger teams, do you have many specialists (eg pure VMware or exchange admins), or are you all mostly generalists with multi-skills? (Vm, exchange, AD, unix etc?)

As I get older I want to specialise more in the things that interest me most rather than being a jack of all trades, but it seems that when new managers come in, they all want everyone to have all the skills. (I really don't want to go SQL training....yawn)

Currently running a team which consists of a 650:1 device ratio... This includes Servers and Workstations (excludes any other network devices)

35+ physical, 100+ virtual, a barebones mirror of the platform's basic services in Azure, and another 20 virtual at our hosting provider. Plus I'm responsible for the entire network from WAN to client. Two members of staff.

It was three :(

directly responsible for 15 servers, 10 vm's over 2 sites with 250ish staff plus all network infrastructure. it support team has 2 including me, all in a £1bn turnover company.

keeps me busy :)
