Hi, I just bought a 4x2tb DS411J and bought it to store HD media and music etc but see it does a lot more.

I will hope to also (in future when I learn how):

set up photo server
set up schedules desktop backup
set up IP camera recording
music server for android phone

I was going to use raid 5.

Question is should I 'waste' disk space using raid as stuff on this wont be critical

also

Should I set up a single volume which seems easiest or create a different volume for each of the above tasks? What are benefits of multiple volumes?

cheers

RAID 5 should give you about 5.5GB of storage with the 4 drives. With that amount of storage some data protection would be worth it.

Only benefit of multiple volumes IMHO is when you come to search through your data but personally I only use a single Volume but with main folders in that. Music, Video, Backup etc. Another thing is if you had quite a few people with their own personal data using it then giving them access to their own seperate volume would probably be useful. If it's just you using then that doesn't matter.

Yeah just me. Thanks for info that's exactly what ill do then.

1 more question in case you know, Am I ok using the synology custom raid with 1 redundant disk that give same 5.5TB. I presume its similar to raid 5 ?

Synology Hybrid Raid and RAID 5 both use differnt file systems. The issue for me was that to recover SHR you would need to use Linux or tools like UFS explorer.

Personally I'd stick with tried and tested RAID 5.

SHR is great if you will be adding different sized drives at different times for example but as you will have all 4 drives go in at once it isn't a problem.
