How many Watts do you really use?

Antec rep - any chance you could tell them to stop ******* about with the prices, I love the cases but it's just daft how much they've gone up recently ;-)

My rig, in siggy, only draws a total of 274w at the wall and that's while running Orthos and Fur stability test at the same time. people may be surprised at just how much power their pc's actually need.

Interesting... using the Antec calculator the E8500 system I propose to build has a requirement of 283W

That sounds terribly low for a modern system to me but I guess I was fooled by the amount of 1000W supplies you can buy these days. :D

Whoop

supply and demand - if people think/want a 1000w psu the manifactures will make one.
That and max effecency is usually around 50% load. So an actual 500w system (tri-sli) need a 1kw psu.

It's simular to the SUV or 4x4 car market - people don't 'need' one - but are sold on the bigger-is-better idea,
or the 1% chance they may actually use it off road once in the next 5 years.

spec me thread - I've an old noisey 250w psu powering a duel core and a 8800gt, what should I get...
- quality 400w will do that easy, with loads of upgrade potential.
- but get a 750w as you may go i7 and crossfire
- but all your actually every doing 70% of the time is suring the net on your 19" screen.

Sorry - end of rant :o

250-375 during boot process, 356w at idle, 6-700w during most gaming (some is higher), 926w peak (900 avg) running furmark and prime 95 on 4 cores on the machine in my sig.

Coolermsater 620w running spec in sig

No idea on the watts but if I run prime 95 and furmark at the same time my PC reboots :p

No problem about the rant I get your point... One small thing tho, PSU's are rated in output power, so a 1KW PSU should output 1KW. If it's 50% efficient, it will draw 2KW from the wall at full tilt. This also means you don't need as much of a highly rated PSU as you think you do as a 300W psu could actually draw 400W from the wall socket while outputting 300W. :)

Sorry what I ment to say is a psu MAX efficiency is around 50% load/rated wattage - will update rant
- and I nearly fell off my chair with chemical's quad 295's... Can I intrest you in F@H good sir? :D

Christ, didn't see Ch3m1c4L's rig, that's the reason we have 1KW PSU's, tho I may stick my neck out and say an 800W PSU would work also if his watt ratings are measured from the wall socket... Still, I wouldn't want to see the power bill! ;)

Nothing can be done about that i'm afraid, we sell in Euros and the pound has crashed against the Euro....it's out of our hands. It works both ways though, when the pound was getting stronger, our prices dropped quite a lot, just hope for a change in the currency ;)
