I'm looking for a cheep 2nd hand lappy in the wanted section but asked for one with some way of using 12v DC as it will live in a camper van.

I've had no answer.....

I'm guessing the problem is that no one has a 12v charger.

My next idea is to just get a 12v to 230v inverter and use the existing mains charger.

I'm after a wattage usage for a 3-4 year old lappy. Any ideas round about?

Just get the inverter, job done. Most laptops are probably around the 100 - 150w but i have a gaming laptop which uses 250w. I am lucky as i work for a company which makes inverters i used my staff discount last week and bought a 400w inverter for £10.

my dads laptop uses 150w, with a pretty power hungry cpu (a p4 prescott one, the desktop version i think) if thats anything to go by so laptops which proper laptop cpus are probably less, but just getting the inverter is the best bet.

i plugged my Rock Quaddra 64 (Clevo D470K) into a kill-a-watt... 96w with full backlight, max volume mp3, toast + ati tool.

idle about 35w.

if its not a stacked laptop, ad its not doing anything an average of below 30w seems fully reasonable
