I used to turn off some stuff and edit the Registry but it makes little or no difference and in many cases it's caused me to re-install XP as it made the system unstable.

I do keep an eye on software I install as I don't like to many things in the process list. Most of the time they are inactive but if they decide to run a scan or an update check it can have quite an effect if playing a game online.

78 processes here. If I shut down some VM's it would probably be at around 65-70.
