squeezing under my car, pulling out the sump plug with the 6-7 litres of oil above it the quickly grabbing the spare sump plug I will have close to hand that actually has a decent washer on it and then getting it wound in?

Do able? Sensible? Easier than draining all the oil and doing it properly!?!?

Just do an oil change. Much, much easier and wont cost that much.

If you try to do it, make sure the engine is stone cold.

Why do it with the engine stone cold? You'll get more oil out if its slightly warm.

he means the other way around, oil change then warm it up, if I want to keep the oil in there, best have it cold and thick and not runny!

I don't need an oil change though :( and its $$$

someone must have tried this before!

because if he attempts to do his quick swap he wants less oil to come out.

Sorry sorry...not enough coffee this morning! Might be advisable putting the car up on a set up of ramps too if you got em, even less oil comes out that way.

Very messy. You'll mess up yourself, your clothes and the drive.

Just wait till your car needs an oil change and then do it.

Very messy, been there done that, was covered in oil, and got oil on the drive. not the best method, i just did an oil change after that.

what about the oil? ok, I'll stop making schoolboy jokes now... ;)

yeah, point taken, I knew it was a little bit of a long shot, I was hoping for some crazy unknown vacuum effect that might save the day or something, alas no

(I was thinking about the oil cap still being on)

If you really have to do it (why??), then jack the car up so the oil is tipped as far away from the sump plug as possible. Use axle stands of course.

I've done it before without too much grief. Usually loose about half a pint of oil, maybe a little more.

I'm not afraid of getting mucky though :p

forgot last time to get a new sump washer, and have seen a few spots underneath from that spot, I want to do it so I know it's done proplerly, even though maybe my working method isn't the bestest for now

Because he could scold himself otherwise. Oil gets very hot and its not always obvious when it is safe to touch.

As the sump plug is usually on the back lower half of the sump get the arse end of the car as high up as possible then.

usually I find a minute or two at idle from cold gives the oil a bit of extra viscosity
