how messy would this going to be?

usually I find a minute or two at idle from cold gives the oil a bit of extra viscosity

Warming the oil reduces viscosity, it doesn't increase it.

If you go ahead with this be prepared for it to get very messy. IME, it's very difficult to catch threads on sump plugs when you are under pressure to do it as quickly as possible and oil is peeing out everywhere :D

You could simply drain the oil into a nice clean container and then pour it back in if you are dead against changing it.

As the sump plug is usually on the back lower half of the sump get the arse end of the car as high up as possible then.

or do it on a hill with the nose pointing down. It could be difficult to get to the sump plug if the back end is jacked up as it may reduce clearance under the vehicle. Although tbh, unless there is virtualy no oil in the sump, it's a very long engine or you jack the back up about 6', I doubt it would make much difference, really.

Put loads of newspaper underneath and pile some kitty litter on top to soak up any oil

Try not to cross thread the new plug in your desperation to stem the flow.

tbh, unless it's leaking badly, I'd be inclined to just stick a piece of mdf or something a bit absorbant under the sump when parked on the drive and leave it until it needs an oil change

i bought a oil drain container from halfrauds the other week £5. You put the container on its side which is slopped which then that feeds a plug hole.

After you filled it up, put the plug back in and then stand the cantainer up-right ... you can then tip from the top aswell.

true, and honestly will probably be what I end up doing, but gotta bounce these ideas around first see what crops up, like turning it upside down! lol

I wasn't thinking when I typed out viscosity, I meant to say changed its viscosity or something like that, same mad moment when I was typing out the thread title! lol at me ;)
