I am looking around on autotrader at used cars (530d sport) and they vary in price so much for similar cars, I can see the dealers overprice their cars, does anyone know how much they usually knock off th autotrader price?

A dealer will typically pay around trade price for their stock. They then mark it up by whatever they need to in order to turn a profit. Fag packet calculations should show what their margin is and how much you can haggle.

Very rarely. People put the price they *think* its worth in the autotrader. Some times its spot on, other times they are way - way off the mark

an idea might be for you to go on ebay and look for recent auctions that have ended for the car you want. you will get a better idea what cars are actually going for, rather than what the owners try to sell them for.

remember, a car is only worth what someone will pay for it.

If you are looking at 530d's you need to find some sad obsessive muppet who spent a great deal of time studying the market to tell you what its worth.

Where would you find one of those... :p

I don't have a clue
:p

Are the manuals better or Autos? They seem to be pretty expensive and difficult to find a nice looking one with leather :(

Errrrrrrrn no idea, can you recomend anyone

:p (Hows the car btw)

IMHO manual is better than auto but thats my personal preference, technically speaking both gearboxes are better and the autobox is very suited to the diesel engine. Manuals are quite rare, it should be easy to find a 'nice looking' one though, simply get a facelift Sport model.

Problem is, you are looking at the absolute most desireable E39 you can get this side of an M5 - everyone wants a Sport, Auto, with Leather. Prices are high, residuals are strong.

What sort of money do you want to spend?

They are very expensive cars and are not good value for money - but if you are prepared to accept its going to be quite a bit older than anything else for the money they are stunning cars.

Basically selling the mondeo and getting the 5 instead, so I guess around 11kish

have found http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WW...category=CARS&channel=CARS&id=200639251524329

looks like a part ex into a mitsubishi dealer, not too far from me either, not sure about having a manual though, guess I will have to test both out to see which one is preferable.
I am kinda worried about auto gearbox failure and potential turbo failure on a diesel. :(

I ought to have a good poke around one at the weekend and see if its genuinely worth me changing the mondeo for one.

£11k will limit your choices quite a bit, but you should be able to find something nice for that eventually. How much is your Mondeo worth?

Look at CarGiant prices - those tend to be spot on imo, or they were certainly rock bottom prices compared to Autotrader when I was looking for mine.

Don't buy the auto if you're worried about fuel economy - they take a 25% economy hit compared to the manuals. That is the only reason I was put off by them.
