Bit of an open ended question, but i currently have a MSI Laptop that has a i7 7700, 16gb DDR4, 1070 8GB card, 15inch screen and a 256ssd as primary drive.

Its served me and is serving me well after 3 years, but my eye is wandering.

I know all round i can get better, but looking at GPUs it seems my best bet is getting a 2070 or 2080 as the 1070 still holds up well as a card.

The 2080s are well out of range at 3 grand but are tbe 2070s going to give me enough bang for buck at their price point over and above what i have?

Or is it worth holding on for a new generation to then get a 2070/80 cheaper?

Recomendations also welcome, i enjoy my MSI so will look at them, but im not closed off to others.

Thanks,

A 2070 RTX will definitely offer improvement over your current setup providing of course you match it with the latest cpu and other components, so that it's not bottle-necked. It's all relative. I wouldn't rule out a 2060 RTX either, which is what I did. Drops the price signifantly. Don't rule out second hand either.

Thanks for your reply.

Im going to keep an eye out for something with a:

i9 10 series
2070 GTX normal not maxq
512gb ssd minimum
17 inch 144 hz
16 or 32 gb RAM

Weight or battery life irrelevant as it sits in the same place plugged in anyway.

1700 to 1800 tops. So im probably a few months away from seeing that sort of pricepoint.

All pointer appreciated

Does your current machine have Thunderbolt? If it does, and if you use it plugged in at the same place all the time, then would an eGPU be an option?

Im not sure, possibly, but ill give this one to my nipper as it will easily run games for him attached to is monitor.

Are the maxq cards badly butchered? I mean i can almost get an ideal spec Omen for 1400 but its maxq.

Advice from someone with an RTX 2080 laptop.

Skip the first gen of RTX cards.

I went from 1070 to max-p 2080.

Some uplift in performance but not enough.
