ok im updating my system , not everything but cpu , memory and maybe mobo

iv got a fairly decent gpu got recently 260 gtx , and at present an am2 9950 ,asus m4a78 pro board and dominator ram so i could just replace the cpu and ram getting the top am3 chip and better ram or sell the amd stuff and get a920 i7 , decent board and ram ,

iv got about £500

thoughts please

At your budget you should only be getting Intel really.
It's not like AMD is bad but you already got a GPU so i can't really say much about saving by going AMD & spending more on a GPU.

If all you need is CPU,Mobo & RAM, then get This & This.

For under £500 you'll end up with a monster system.

While I agree you should be going Intel with that sort of budget, I certainly wouldn't be recommending the P55 route, especially at that sort of money!

You can get a great X58 setup for the same price. Something along the lines of this would be money better spent ;)

For raw calculation Intel win it, in particular the X58 system. However it's more about balancing cpu speed/hdd speed/gfx/ram to get the best performance from the system.

What do you do with the machine?

also thinking about a small solid state drive but a little confused as i could pay say £100 0r up to £600 for the same size drive , im assuming its down to speed but would i really notice the difference ?

thanks for the help all btw ,going to go for intel i7 now :D
