when used in an overclocked i7 920 system. Not so worried about gaming improvements but would be interested to get opinions on whether I would actually see a difference in apps. Numbers in a benchmark don't bother me - I want to be able to tell there is a difference.

The more expensive ones have 7-7-7-20 timings for the latency as opposed to 9-9-9-24 on the cheaper set. You will not notice much of a performance boost but your system might feel a tiny bit more snappy.
