How much can you squat?

Morning all,

Just been having a conversation with a few of my friends about squatting. I always argue it's the single best exercise you can do in the gym but they don't seem to bother with it. One of them gives it a go once a week but says he struggles squatting more than 45kg.

My personal best is 107.5kg for 5 sets of 5 reps. This was last time I was training. Tuesday this week I hit 100kg for 5x5. I've never been the biggest out of my friends, probably the leanest but not biggest. They all have bigger frames than myself but I don't think they believe that I can squat that amount.

I'm pretty sure some of you on here will put 100kg to shame but I think it's perfectly achievable by anyone if you put your mind to it. I started out squatting 40kg, an olympic bar and 10kg plates on each side. When I hit 60kg I honestly thought that was my limit, it felt massively heavy on my back and I really struggled to get 5x5 out of it. I stuck with my routine of adding 2.5kg each time and now 60kg is part of my warm up sets. Bring on 110kg.

What's your personal bests and/or current squat weight?

100kg but I really do despise squats. The bar hurts my upper back something wild and I end up with marks. It's always resting on the correct point and I've tried them on and off for years, it's still brutal.

Leg press is 180kg upwards. Most of my leg day consists of machine exercises and isolations and I suppose I'm proof you can get big without squats. I prefer dead lifts.

you just need to squat some more.
Used to feel like shrinking with 80kg on my back, no I need twice as much to get that feeling. :D

175KG 1RM a month or two ago. When I first started out 50KG on a smith was tough. Working sets will be anything from 110KG upto 150KG, depending on the rep range.

I enjoy a plate loaded 45 degree press more though I know how beneficial squats are in themselves and to other lifts so will continue to do them.

At the moment I'm doing 120kg for sets, previous 1RM was 150kg but wouldn't get near that at the moment

Squats are not my strong point even though I have large legs.

Can squat 125KG for 6 good reps usually do 5 or 6 sets starting at 70Kg for 15 reps Warm up then puting the wait up each set, if I am feeling mad I may go to 130Kg for a couple of reps. LOL

You don't have to go all the way down.

My arse doesn’t touch the floor if that’s what you mean. LOL

I do go pretty low though, I go as far past parallel as it feels comfortable if that makes sense.

If I'm sitting on the floor and my girlfriend jumps on me I can get up with her on my back without using my arms, so 60kg? I do cardio though, so drop that a bit and I'd be able to do it all day.

I'll put her on a diet and let you know if that's true or not :p
