how much data is used when gaming online???

Depends on the game, number of players etc.
Anywhere from 3 KB/s to 15 KB/s down.
Not sure about upload, but at a guess 5-10KB/s. I will check the next time I play.

Many MMORPG's for example can be played using a dial-up modem connection (lag would be horrible), WoW and EQII are a couple of examples that had this as a minimum requirement. Online shooters I imagine would be less but this should at least tell you how little data is transferred. Patching said games and downloading updates however can be sizeable but these are relatively infrequent.

get du meter and run a stopwatch while you play it will tell you the exact amounts of incoming and outgoing.

I can host about a 10 man BF2 server on my 20000k/768k connection, any more people join and the lag goes crazy. Meaning around 10 kb per person.

It's the 12th of feburary, I'm a heavy City of Heroes player, and most of the 4 GB usage on my line this month has been my housemates watching stuff on iPlayer and YouTube.

That's upload from hosting a server, which is generally higher than the upload when playing on a server.
