How much difference does an extra inch make ???

I've just used a 20" Dell 2001FW monitor at work and it seems to be a fantastic piece of kit. I thought i might invest in one but after seeing the price i'm now not sure......
19" TFTs are considerably cheaper and i'm not sure i can justify around £200 + more the Dell when it's only 1" bigger, i could practically buy 2 * 19" good quality TFT screens for the price.
Obviously the Dell can do 1600*1200 resolution which is a good point for me as i'm currently running games in that res and do a bit of work in photoshop. A 19" can only do 1280 * 1024 i belive ? Having said that, how much longer is my P4 3ghz @ 3.45, 1gb ram and 6800GT GFX card going to be able to run games in 1600*1200 mode ? I'm not intending upgrading the PC for another year at the earlist

Yeah, so would i obviously but would you pay £200 extra for it ? I'm not really a gamer either to be honest (hence the older kit and a lack of willingness to upgrade !! :D)
 
The £200 19" screens you are referring to are that price partly because they're smaller and have less pixels, but also partly because they use cheaper panels.

The Dell you've used will probably be something like a PVA, which have great colours and great viewing angles, and display 16.7M colours (24 bit). The £200 19" screens will be TN Film panels, which are quick for games and cheap, but have poor viewing angles, a lack of black depth, and are only 18 bit colour and use dithering to make up the number of colours to 16.2M.

So you're not just paying for an extra inch. There's a quality difference too. A 19" PVA (SM970P) or MVA (VP930) panel will be well over £300.
 
Thanks for the info mate, i hadn't thought about it like that. I've now ordered the 20" Dell...it's only money after all !!! :D
