Ive just bought a wii, and forgot how consoles look non HD :p

Does the component lead for the wii make the picture a lot sharper or is it not really worth having?

Makes a massive difference; had to survive on composite when I got a Wii at UK launch and component cables were nowhere to be seen. The component cable brings out the detail.

Yes, definately get the Nintendo one. I did a comparison between the official one and the Snakebyte Componenet cable which is well thought of. The Nintendo lead displayed a more 'neutral' colour (there was a blue sheen to the Snakebyte cable) and wasn't as blurred as the Snakebyte cable.

If you want to play most of the classic Sega games on the Wii, the component cable is NOT supported.

It used to work, but a recent software update has caused the video output to stop working for the older games like Sonic etc.

Still for new Wiii games it really helps
