Looking for solution to support 8 disks in raid 5.
dont need management tools, dont need hot swap, loosing two hdds would be a pain in preverbials but not disastrous. Want good value maximised read/write performance and to understand the bang for buck in this area.
Recent investigation shows that a cheap rocketraid 622 performs no better than windows 7 software striping for raid 0. (Cant check raid 5 as windows 7 doesnt support raid 5 in software).
I am keen to understand what i can get for what money.
Given that modern CPUs have oodles of spare memory and cpu cycles and this is only set to increase, am keen to understand the value in various price points of a hardware raid controller.
Perhaps there is no point buying a raid controller, rather than say an 8 port HBA from supermicro with flex raid on a ups, unless you spend £300?, £400?.
What are the price/value points when purchasing a hardware raid controller, any good review sites for HBAs/Raid Controllers?
Is a raid array on Flex Raid as portable as any hardware controller (am keen to be able to plug the hba/raid controller into another pc from time to time to backup the data quickly)?
If flexraid arrays are just as portable and just a quick than controllers less than £250, then i will probably go with a software solution on an HBA. Still keen to understand the price points though.
thanks for advice
