I’m thinking of taking my own heavy duty fabrics to India to have some Breeks (plus 4s) and hiking trousers tailor made.

The fabric I’ve seen on flea-bay is 1.5m wide.

Does anyone know what lengths I would need to buy? Is there any easy guide for such things?

Height 5ft 8, waist 38inch, inside leg 30inch.

Thanx

Ricochet J's right - India will have an entire street in every town just selling fabrics. Don't dismiss it for inferior quality as well..that region of the globe is where almost all Western labels are made.

Precisely. Their key strength is spices and textiles. They know a thing or two. I've been India a few times and you'll see things there you never thought existed. Give it it try.

Thanx.

Yes, I’ll buy a bit more than I need but I haven’t got a clue where to start size wise.

I’ve been to India about 8 times and I’ve never seen heavy duty materials like moleskin. I've never seen Harris Tweed equivalents either.

My wife had a (beautiful) Punjabi Salwar made in Mapsa, Goa from a quality tailor’s shop in one of the streets more or less within the market. I had a good look around but didn’t see any heavy duty materials. I shouldn’t think, with their climate, they would have much of a call for such heavy fabrics.

Sorry to Bump - but does anyone know what lengths I would require?

I don't know if there is a local Womens' Institute in the Yellow Pages:)

Find a fabric shop that sells patterns too - either buy the pattern for something similar to what you want (loads of the big pattern books have costumes at the back which should have things such as plus-4s), or just look at the back of the pattern packet - should be a little table so you can get the right amount of fabric for your size.

Clearly the tailor may not work to a pattern quite like it, and might prefer to use the fabric in different ways, so take that as a minimum.

Sara – Thanx, I’ll try and find a pattern shop somewhere, I suppose I could phone a bespoke tailor.

Andrex – If I knew what you meant I could comment: lol dvdbelly ???

I was told many times when I attended training courses and said the same to others when I myself instructed people “There is only one stupid question – the one that is never asked.”

All you other guys; thanx for your replies.
