How much do I upgrade?

First of all my system specs:

CPU: i5 2500K
RAM:Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB 1600Mhz
GPU: HIS Radeon 5850 Turbo
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Z68
PSU: Corsair 650W
Case: Thermaltake Armor
HDD : 2 old 1TB things....

I have made a thread similar to this previously. However, back then I had a vastly smaller budget so my options weren't quite as open.

Cutting to the chase...I have been wanting to upgrade my Radeon since the new 7000 series came out. I haven't had the money nor the real need to; my current system runs every game almost on the highest settings at 1920x1200.

I am a bit funny about the "almost" bit. I like to know that I'm getting everything out of a game when I buy it. I have been holding off playing The Witcher 2 for so long because I want to see it in all of its glory.

So I have decided that i am going to treat myself for Christmas and upgrade. Initially I thought that i'll just replace the GPU with a 7970, stick in an SSD and leave it at that.

I'm now thinking that I want to upgrade more. Getting new hard drives would be a start as theyre quite old, I'd also like a new case as this one is just ugly. my motherboard whilst good doesn't have the option to Crossfire which does kind of bug me.

I'm not really sure weather basically buying a whole new system would be worth it over what I have now? My budget would be around £850ish if I was to go down that road.

I haven't really looked into anything specific yet, I'd just like to know what other people think really as I'm quite torn.

Cheers.

Still a pretty decent system that, personally id add in an ssd for the os and a new gpu. Your current hdd's will be fine for storage and games that you play less frequently. A new card such as a 7950/7970 will be plenty for your res of 1920x1200. Also, is your system overclocked?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE FARCRY3, Hitman Absolution, Sleeping Dogs & 20% off MOH Warfighter PC Games £251.99
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TD250BW) £143.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST2000DM001) £71.99
Total : £479.36 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Something like the above, plus a case of your choice. I agree with setter though, you do have a pretty good system already, but its your money :p

You could always change your motherboard later down the line if you decide to crossfire. The 7950 overclocked should be pretty beefy :D

Here is a review of the above GPU plus overclocking results

Like I said.. it was just a thought lol.

My main thinking was that if I'm changing the case it would be rude not to change everything else :)

But I think I'll go for just the case, GPU and hard drives. Thanks for the advice!

Is it not worth going for a 7970 over the 7950 for an extra £50?

The windforce version of the 7970 is £323.99 (£72 extra)
It all depends on how far you want to go, and how much you want to spend. You could overclock the above card and get 7970 speeds, and the money you save could go towards a nice case. That is what i would do, but it's your call :D
