Hi all,

Just wondering how much you all charge to reinstall windows, install the drivers, anti virus etc?

Its for my sisters friend.

Ta

If it is for a friend or family, nothing.

If it is for a random person my family/friends know then 20 quid or something.

Windows is easy to install, as are drivers/anti-virus. I would only charge more if I have to do anything else, like having to back it up first or something. It has been a long time since I helped with anyone's computer who wasn't someone I already knew, so most of my repairs are for people I know. I get paid in beer :p

40 quid for copy files from machine, reinstall os and AV, then copy files back.

I usually take an image of this too and store it on a spare hard drive.

Next time (if they're prone to messing up their pc), it'll be a much quicker job

20 quid for a good cleanup (if it's viable) even for friends

For closest friends, free..

At the end of the day, they either pay you a bit, or they pay someone else LOADS

£50 flat fee for an OS re-install, I'll copy files if they are in easy locations. I also take a pre-rebuild image of the disk as bledd does. Covers your arse when they go nuclear on you for losing something even when you tell them 10 times that data will be lost if not specified to be kept.

Will not migrate program data as part of that cost though, goes onto hourly rate which is between 30-40 an hour.

The cost would be inversely proportional to said girls hotness and likelihood of joining me for a drink.

Or about €20-€40 depending how much effort was involved.

dude what do you use to take an image once you have completed the install?

£40 flat fee.

Copy files to my external hard drive, backup drivers, export a system spec with Everest just in case. Reinstall OS, install AV, Firefox with AdBlockPlus and EasyList and then dump the files back.

After I've done the install, like bledd. I also make an Acronis Image - saves going through pain again.

What they're prepared to pay, really. Family and friends are free, of course. Charging your mates for a favour is just sad and desperate. However, they do have to wit until I have some free time.

close friends family free

friends of friends £30 or more depending what what else i have to do

the image idear is a good one there... should have thought of that before i had the same laptop come to me 4 times in the past month.....

40-50 quid usualy, unless there family I REALY REALY like.
And something I always do after is give them the bill.
Yup thats right, A BILL.
And right at the bottom it has that massive "your a lucky sob" discount shown so they can see just how much they would have got screwed at you know where :D
After they see that there usualy VERY greatful.

Robbing bar-stewards! If somebody asked me to do it I'd ask for a fiver at most.

I don't mean to offend, but I assume you're still in school. I value my time off, and an OS reinstall setup generally takes up a whole evening after work (or the best part of it meaning I can't really do much else with my time)

When I was younger, I'd do it for free. I'm sorely tempted to make a business of it in St Davids, since I'm the only person that people come to, it's almost annoying when I go home, there's always a few pc's at my mums house waiting for me to 'take a quick look at'

Agreed. I don't do reinstalls for friends any more (well I do the very occasional thing for close friends). It's just not worth my time anymore.
