How much do you need to spend to get better results than a top end smartphone?

Just wondering as I don't have a lot of joy with my phones as I keep breaking them, so only buy mid-range and SIM free nowadays and am always disappointed with the photo quality as one would expect.

Can £150 or so buy me a camera with better results than an iPhone or top end Samsung?

Cheers.

Depends what you want to take photos of. In some cases, a smartphone will get you better pictures than any camera will.

From an interview with Magnum photographer and photojournalist, Michael Christopher Brown:

What do you find appealing about shooting with a camera phone: is it the portability, the fact that it’s less intimidating to your subjects, or something else?
It’s a number of things, including what you’ve mentioned. Mostly, I just enjoy the ease of operation, and how it is inconspicuous and makes no noise. That, combined with the way subjects react when photographed with a phone, which is different than their reaction with a camera.

I'd say my sigma art f1.4 35mm was better.
Canon 50mm f1.8 not so much

First was 500,second was 50 quid.

But the value of having a good phone and having it on you all the time takes the money out of the question for me.

Phone cams have gotten so good I sold my kit that was for the same range.
I still have my dslr for tele and macro.

You'd probably need to spend as much as the phone I'd say from having nothing.

Remember you won't carry your dslr(or whatever) day to day

I've got a Panasonic GX80 (purchased for £309 with a kit lens) and carry this around in my bag as I don't buy top end phones anymore.

A phone is, of course the most convenient but if you want better quality than a smart phone in addition to a non-fixed lens a 1" sensor compact may be what you should look at, the Sony RX100 series are hard to beat.
