How much does 4870's GDDR5 make a difference? Find out!

Hey Devious

DDR5 really does make a lot of difference compared to GDDR3 speed. Im so glad ATI have moved forwards to this as it will pus newer and better technologies.

I have always wondered if ATI will ever double the 256 bit memory to 512 or is there really no need as the faster memory will just be able to communicate a lot faster but just along a narrower memory width of 256-bit?

The tests show that the 4870 is only 6-10% faster than the 4850 clock for clock. And the price disparity is 35% between the two. So bang for buck wise the 4850 is the clear winner. The 4850 clocks very well too.

Thinking of it again it will be a much better investment to get a 4850 rather than a 4870 for the price of money but im little worried about the temps that the 4850 gives off. Im not sure if youll agree with me or would the better solution be to increase fan speed or have better case cooling.

Increase the fanspeed if you can deal with the noise, it's quite loud. Or get an alternative cooler for the card, lots to choose from. I know this cuts into the saving you get when buy the cooler and then you have to overclock it. I went for the simple approach and just bought the 4870, the stock cooler on that is not too bad, up the fanspeed a little to 30% and it's still very quiet. High clocks and GDDR5, just wins it for me. ATi needs the money anywho so I'm happy to give them a little bit extra. :)

Hi tdream

Thanks for the advice, so far i am inclined to get a 4870 rather than a 4850 due GDDR5 and the ability to overclock well as im obsessed with having the fan speed for 3870 x2 on full speed so that it will have a longer life-span. The fan noise doesnt actually bother me as i always wear headphones which block most of the noise anyway.

For people who overclock and don't use high res monitors then 4850 is the way to go but if i used a 24 inch monitor then it would have to be a 4870 as i think the gddr3 will start to hold the 4850 back when using a decent amount of aa. 4850 is still for me the best card on the market for price/performance though.

Not really fair though to talk about the price disparity being 35% though considering that the cards are not clocked the same. Clock for clock DDR2-PC4200 cas5 RAM is the same speed as DDR2-PC8500 cas5 RAM yet is much cheaper....

The price is 35% different not only because it's 6 or 7% faster clock for clock.....but because you get a faster clock too.

THey need to start teaching logic in schools
Sheeesh.
