I am learning to drive and hope to be done soon ish.

Im nearly 21, would it be worth holding out till then to insure a car?

Even with 0 no claims bonus would it be that much different?

Cheers

Car insurance is one of those mysterious things that works differently for everyone, so try running a few quotes with different age. In my case the difference was around 10% just changing my age from 20 to 21 but we were still talking well above a thousand here.

I never saw this fabled "drop" in insurance. When I was <21 people told me it was 21, when I was 21 people said it was 25. Now I'm 29 and I've only ever seen steady drops until now when I've plateaued.

I'll see what 30 brings, but by the looks of it, it will be an increase.

I've never been quoted more than £1200 to insure any vehicle I've owned though, even going back to 18 with a Saxo VTR.

Never noticed a steep decline in price either. What I have noticed is that regardless of age, the length of ownership seems to make the bigger difference. I guess that's down to familiarity with the car. This is just from running online quotes from confused.com etc.

Agreed with the above. Mine did drop at around 21 but that was due to 3 years' no claims and 4 years holding a license rather than age.

The only noticeable drop I've seen was when turning 40 (I'm 41 now) that said, you still have to shop around.

I recall when I turned 25, my insurance actually went up no matter who I was quoted by....

It won't go down especially as your new driver, 25 is supposed to be the age where it goes down a bit. Most of it is to do with postcode lottery, I've had my license for 5-6 years now and in my early 20's with NCB and it is still expensive, thanks to the postcode I live in, braaps!

My renewal is four days before my birthday, and I just turned 21. I changed nearly every detail on my policy renewal due to changes in circumstances and it came out to roughly the same as the renewal quote, which was around £150 cheaper than last year. Then after a bit of sweet-talking and bartering with the polite young lady on the phone I managed to haggle another £100 off.

Quite pleased with £450 in the end :)

Mine didn't drop much but it did open up insurers to insure me on cars they wouldn't previously, when I bought my car they wouldn't insure me regardless of the price until I turned 21 then it was just like £900

there is no massive drop at 21 or 25, its a slowly reducing amount. say £50 for every year older you get. and yes it is worth waiting a few weeks for your age to change

Whether it's coincidence or not, mine has gone down quite substantially this year (turned 25 in March), although then again it's been dropping by similar amounts every year since I started driving anyway. It started at nearly £2,000 four years ago, I've just renewed at £503. When I move in a few weeks, that should take another £200 off if the quotes are to be believed.

also estimated mileage plays a part in the quotes.... if you estimate more mileage.... more time on the road so therefore increased chance something is going to happen.

but yea mine hasn't really gone down all that much and i'm 25... had been named driver till this year though. so technically it's gone up xD think we were paying about 600£ for 12 months with my dad as policy holder and myself and mother as named. now we've taken out a new policy in my name with them both as named drivers and paying £650 for 10 months. and as luck would have it.... 2 months after taking it out in my name a woman drives into the back of me..... /sigh..... quick side question.... because it's her insurance paying for everything will my premium go up because i've made a claim even though it was entirely her fault?
