How Much Does it Cost to Build a P55 Motherboard?

What i want to know is why wou can't put a motherboard together like you can a whole PC... one step closer to building a working computer from nothing but chicken wire and paper clips in your shed :p

Edit, distracted me from the thread. Thanks for the link. I think he overestimates some parts and underestimates others, it looks like the gigabit port for example is a cost for one unit rather than a cost for 5000 or so. Doesn't seem to include the cost of design either. Paying a licence fee to nvidia is interesting, $5 per board suggests nvidia are loving it

I'd like to see you solder surface mount components by yourself =p

I had to solder some really small MOSFETs on a circuit I built in uni last year, and that was bad enough. Tiny things are a bitch to solder.

Yep it could be done, if you had enough patience.... It would take weeks and weeks of soldering, and making a 6 layer PCB on your shed would take bloody ages also! :D

I'd like to see someone do it tho, I could do it with enough time but I have better things to be doing like posting on a forum... wait, what? :D
 
I have always wondered how much money it would take to go to a company like say Gigabyte and specify what exactly you want from a motherboard and how it is layed out :p If I was a billionaire I'd probably get some custom made motherboards with the exact features I want.

But ofc the make u pay the R&D costs then make it public :(
 
I do think it would be cool to be able to get motherboard sections in quarters or something and slot them together.

"I'll have an X58 chipset... socket 1366... 10 billion PCI-E lanes... 50 USB ports..."

:D
