My GF wants a cat. I do too as I loved having one when I was a kid, but I didn't have to pay for it then!

How much can we expect a cat to cost to run? Taking into account purchase price, running costs and repair bills? We already have a cat flap left by the previous house owners.

Thanks!

very little to run :D

ours eats techni-cal dried food ( much better than tinned food )

a £30 bag lasts about 8 months

one tin of tuna ( springwater ) , 90p for 3 days

treats £1 a week

insurance £9 a month

jabs £30 per year

cost of cat was about £450 but they start from free :p

I'll agee with what Rotty has said about food, my cat doesn't seem to like cat food she just seems to lick the jelly/gravy off then leave the rest. Must better to buy dried food in bulk and then feed her on cheap tuna aswell.

Also, our cat was free as we knew someone who's cat had just had a litter so we were sorted there :p.

Finally, none of our cats have ever had any jabs or insurance  but the first one lived till 15+ and died of something that a jab couldn't cure and the second is going strong at 8.

You're only really looking at around ~£3-£4 a week for food really so not costly at all, well worth it :D.

Don't buy a cat, get one from a rescue centre, donation of about £50, lots to chose from (all ages) and you'll be doing a good thing.

I concur. We got our cat from the Cats Protection Agency. He's 13 now (10 when we got him) and he's the most loving, adorable creature I've ever encountered.

I imagine the rescue centers will be inundated with animals soon, as the christmas period is over, and families are giving up on them.

Do the right thing, and get one from a rescue center :)

I've heard that getting one from the RSPCA is a right PITA. They need to come round and do surveys and stuff and will refuse you if there is not enough grass in your garden. Is that true?

To be honest, I think the rescue centres will be pleased to get a home for the cat. So long as you don't go in dressed head to toe in Burberry you should be fine.

I believe they did do an 'assessment' when we were having the cat, but it was basically they came in, talked to us for 10 minutes and said 'yeah you seem like nice people, here, have a cat'.

Like DanTheMan said, I'm sure they'll be glad to get them into a new home, especially at this time of the year.

If the RSPCA proves problematic, look for your local CPA or equivalent.

repair bills?

6 x vases
1 x bed
2 x sofas
5 x lampshades
1 x light
2 x blinds
3 x pairs of curtains
1 x video (no, that's not the litter tray Nutmeg...)
3 x carpets
1 x shed roof felt
4 x blusher brushes (they look like kittens to a cat)
