the latest build I'm collecting the parts for is £1045(still need to order a sound card so not added to toatal) and that doesn't include the case, hard disk/s, optical drive, monitor(tho bought that last month and cost £570, new u2711 from the bay), kb, mouse and speakers. £460 of that comes from the 2x 6950s(saphhire toxic) :)

case etc are being carried over from the previous build/s, bought over time to replace bits that died or I simply couldn't resist getting(g15v2, g9 and z5500 to name 3 :) ).

My last build in 07 cost me a good 1300 1400, i've recently upgraded and so far i've spent the guts of 1000 quid, recyclying the old HDD PSU and case :S

It all started last week too looking at gaming bundles and then it sorta grew from there. I love my student overdraft!

Cpu, mobo and ram cost £580.00
gpus were £189.00 and £214.00 respectively.
Ocz vertex 2e, £160.00
Samsung F3 1TB, £30.00 sh
Lian Li A70F case, £162.00

Prolimatech super mega coler, £70.00
Zalman fan controller, £15.00 sh
Corsair hx 850 psu, £90.00 sh
Benq fp241w, £430.00
Current mix of fans, £60.00 ono
Logitech g15 keyboard, £25.00 sh
Logitech g500 mouse, free on rma

When you see all the different bits and bobs, it does seem expensive. But the good thing is, selling your old kit at the right time can help with new purchases. Knowing me id probably have gambled and drunk the money away.:D I used to do a lot of clay pigeon shooting, now that was a very expensive hobby.

Tbh, i never buy new parts, i always wait for a few generations.
then buy used.

Q6600 - £50
Dfi P45 mobo - £45
4gb ram - £40
Noctua NH-D14 - £40
Case (was new) £60
Corsair psu £40
HD 5850 £90
Samsung F3 500gb £20
dvdrw off an old pc,
22" monitor £50

total £435 :)

without checking all the receipts but it'd probably be in excess of 1500 when all the bits and bobs are totted up, but as setter says you could be doing worse things with your money. I know i certainly used to!

agreed....smart timing in selling off existing parts to fund upgrades is the best way to stay at near cutting edge if thats your thing...I like this approach :D

Some people just like to drop a wad of cash of a good system then never touch it until it cant run the latest games....then go do the same again.

Current problem is for PC gamers, that if you put together a high-end system say within the last 2 years...apart from maybe a new GPU or cheeky little SSD there isnt really much of a point upgrading the core guts of a last gen i5 or i7 (game requirements wise)

Yep, ive just assembled a second i7 rig from sh parts, the board, cpu and ram cost less than half of those in sig. The rest was made up from a case i had and parts gave to me from an old rig of my brothers.

Good man...best way to do it if you have access to the parts.

I'm about to start sourcing parts to build my first dedicated HTPC for my living room....as these dont need to be very powerful systems I'm thinking a socket 775 build will be more than adaquate for some HD movie playback and music

Will defo be trying to source as much suitable second hand hardware as possible, the only things I will probably be buying new will be the PSU, case and fans

yes mine is over 1-2 years, problem is i came from a gaming laptop, with no resale value so all this is 100% fresh cash! the screens are nice tho, everything else will be part new part old!

this thread doesnt really work for me as i upgrade and sell on the old kit so my upgrade is subsidised

i.e. i bought ballistix 8gb at £39.99 and sold the old stuff for ~£30 so it was a £10 upgrade which i think is worth it :)
