How much for a clutch is reasonable?

I paid £310 for a clutch change on an old Almera Gti and was told that was above average.

Depends on the labour time really as the clutch itself will be less than £100 at a guess.

I know - it just seemed high.

I'm not lazy, just forget to do it work and they're shut when i ring lol.

Apologies if my post sounded a bit rude. Reading it back now it kind of does. I know its a fair amount of work but don't know a ballpark figure myself. Thought that would be the best thing to see if one is trying to pull a fast one.

Know what its like trying to get time to make calls at work :(

Well lets say you go for the cheapest you can get at ECP, which is some crappy sounding Transmech clutch kit which would be £66.

A garage would get further discount, so lets say £45-50. Excluding anything else that may need to be picked up such as pivot bushes / fork etc - most don't bother, so I'm not going to here.

That leaves £400 for at worst a 4-5 hour job.

£80 an hour isn't really acceptable to me.

I think the clutch on the 1.4 is the same as the mk1 1.6? If so, I've had 2 clutches replaced on both mk1 focus' that I owned and each time I paid less than £200.

It depends on a manner of things. My car needed two new drive shaft seals which were £30 a pop from Nissan. Bumping the cost up £60 there and then. I paid in the region of £400 for a 2.0 Primera 3 years back. I could have gone to Mr Clutch but I was worried they would bodge it. I would be looking for a good mechanic rather than one that is cheap.

Cheers guys. Got a quote of £230 from 1 garage and £250-300 from another. These are more resonable and to be expected and compare with you guys. :) The £450 one was on something then....

Make absolutely sure that the clutch slave gets replaced at the same time. It's foolish to risk re-using the old one as if/when it fails (and it's not uncommon for them to fail) you have to do most of the job again.

How do you know his original quote was for the cheapest and nastiest pattern part they could find?

I don't, but to guesstimate the cost I have to start somewhere and I would hazard a guess that most garages out there will want to increase their profit margins.

Even going for something more appropriate £100-150 that's still labour @ £60-70ph.
