Gf had a slow speed "incident" with a bloke in a Corsa (old shape, 1997 ish), cracking his bumper slightly. He was very friendly and said he'd phone her the next day about fixing his bumper. 3 weeks passed and he then has phoned up saying that its going to cost £500 to fix it

How much is it likely to cost to spray a bumper? We're thinking maybe its a better idea to get one from a scrappy due to colour matching etc? £500 is way over the top is it not?

Cheers

£500 would get you a new bumper part, sprayed, not just the spraying and blending of the existing bumper. tell him you want to see the quote and you want him to get 3 quotes and go with the most competitive. the cars probably only worth £500. essentially, you need to put the ball back in his court.

Decide if £500 is more than you'd be willing to pay before going through insurance (assuming this is her fault). Ask him to get a reasonable quote - ring up a few places and ask them for a quote so you get the ballpark - and base the above on that. Whether you'd be willing to pay the £500 over an insurance claim just affects how nice you are about asking him to get a cheaper quote. Bear in mind he could claim for whiplash unexpectedly.

£500, £350 for the repair most likely from Vauxhall and £150 in his pocket.

Now to decide, if you want to go through the hassle of your insurance, pay excess and lose your no claims or put it down to experience and cough up?

Edit - on the other hand do as above and call his bluff?

Well we're thinking that we'll tell him we're going to put it through the insurance as the excess is £300 and see what happens. We're just a tad suspicious that it's taken 3 weeks for him to consider phoning us. Thats a lot of time to think about what extra damage can be created....
Ultimately going through the insurance will mean that it'll affect him as he'll have to state he's made a claim so hopefully he'll lower his £500 figure that he's aiming for.
We had a brief quote over the phone from the local bodyshop for £185+vat for spraying and then obviously we source a bumper from somewhere so it should be a fair bit cheaper than £500, but not sure of the quality of their work.
If I'm honest, its the whiplash thing that concerns me the most, cant afford to be paying out thousands for a phoney claim :(

I think ultimately going through the insurance will be the safest route but cant help feeling annoyed that he's possibly trying to con us :(

if he does make a claim for whiplash it will go through your insurance and not you personally, you will lose your no claims and you will have to pay an excess.
the £150 he may be making from this may seem like a fair price tbf, it wasn't his fault that he is in this position, it's yours (well, your missus') ask him if he'll take £400 as this is the price you could get it done for OR you could ignore him and tell him you have no idea what he's on about, a lot's happened in 3 weeks and does he have any witnesses? ;)

You have a valid point as technically it wasnt his fault, but he did brake for no reason when the coast was clear but thats another matter :p

There was infact a witness to the accident, and we have her number, but she didnt see the damage at the scene so isnt much use for that. Will the insurance company not get stressed if he makes a claim further down the line and find out that we didnt go through them?

Your car doesn't have much luck, does it?

Not in the last month it hasn't, no!

Literally the week after somebody backed into it in a carpark a taxi driver reversed into the front of it and scratched the bumper as well.

Oh well. Supposed to come in threes, bad luck, isnt it? That'll be this weeks damage then :p

I would just tell your insurance company and say he overtook you earlier (before the witness saw) and braked suddenly.

Somebody reversed into my bumper last month. The final bill for the repair and respray of the bumper was £310.

Is that for a brand new bumper? If so then we're definately getting shafted! Cheers for that :)

If it makes you feel better my bike fell over earlier this week.
