Having just discovered that my backbox is about to fall off my 1.4 1999 clio can anyone tell me how much i can expect to pay for a backbox/exhaust plus fitting? Also is there anything i can do to hold it up in the meantime?

From what i can see it's rusted on the join between the backbox and the pipe, is this a case of a new box or a whole exhaust?

Thanks, chaps.

Use cable ties to hold it up, but don't be stingy; they shouldn't melt if it's the back box you're supporting. I very much doubt you'll need a whole new exhaust, they tend to be built in sections and at the most you'll need to replace the mid-exhaust and the backbox. Have a look under your car or if you have a Haynes to see where the other end of the pipe attaches, I expect it attaches after the cat, so you shouldn't need that replacing.
Having the mid-section of the exhaust done on my 106 cost me about £80 including labour.

I have no cable ties, but have used a piece of string to support it. It should be ok until saturday as i don't need to drive much, just very short journeys so the string won't melt/burn. I think it will be a new backbox at least as it's very rusty, but if i can get it all done for less than £100 i'll be happy.

Cable ties are surprisingly useful, I recommend getting some off the bay for a couple of quid. Never know when they might come in handy.

Looks like i spoke too soon, I was driving as sedately as i could, then i heard a clang accompanied by a scraping sound:

My car now sounds hilarious, all these chavs paying for big bore exhausts are missing a trick here. Just get rid of your backbox, weight saving and it makes your car sound awesome!
