How much gain from SLi?

I have an AMD 4200+ Dual Core and a 7900GTX, I can run Stalker at around 20-30fps at 1680x1050 at full detail and dynamic lighting and Crysis is between 10 and 20fps. How much gain would another 7900GTX yield in my system?

Honestly probably better to go with a 8800 GT, or something similar - more boost, better (newer tech).

Still, suppose it depends on the price of a 7900GTX :)

If the gain is so low, why do people spend so much on going SLi?

I was considering getting another 8800gt

Because some people want the best performance. Even if the gain was 2 percent some people would want it.

As it is, the gains become larger the higher the res... SLI with a puny 17 or 19" res screen won't be worth it for example. A 24 or even larger (so 1920x1200 or more) the gains become more noticeable.

Also, I could be wrong here but I think that the 8x00 series is better for SLI than the 7 series... but that is from memory.

A bit steep.

For the same overall outlay (sell your 7900GTX + Extra Cash) you could almost buy a GeForce 8800GT which will run quite a bit better than SLI'd 7900GTX's in Crysis. Bare in mind that if your CPU is at stock speeds, that's not really helping the matter either. You'll want to overclock that as 7900GTX's in SLI or a single 8800GT would be held back by it.

Hmmm... well... a 8800 GT costs 117 brand new... so that is around 50 pounds more, for probably more performance, a new warranty, and DX10 (even though most titles don't support it well, at least you have it).

Sell your old card if you can, and the upgrade will only cost you a little...

Also agreed with above, if you can overclock the CPU more, its a very good thing.

An 8800GT is how much better than a 7900GTX?

£70 was for a new 7900GTX with warranty.

I would say about 50%:) 15-20% is a bit on the low side

Lol, coming from a guy named NVIDIA ;)

I did some testing and it was about 30-35% over all considering games do/dont support sli and eveything in between, but it all depends on what games you play, some games dont support SLI at all so the gain is zip even the odd drop in performance, but in games that do support SLI two 7900gtx's can be very fast. I would say its worth it, if you can pick up a 7900gtx for the right price and most of the games you play support SLI.

No idea on make, its actually £80 too inc p&p.

The 8800GT gives same performance as 2*7900GTX's so I'm kind o f not seeing the point of Sli now.

I used 2 x XFX Nvidia GF9600GT XXX SLi that run so fast also much faster than my old 8800GTX Extreme. Good buy are 8800GT or 9600GT - it up to you which one...

I went from a 7950GX2 (clocked to 7900GTX SLI performance) to an 8800GT and except for ETQW the 8800GT is much faster (atleast 30%) in every game... in some shader heavy games its 2-3x faster.

I have no idea what the gains in stalker would be with SLI - but 2x 7900 series cards in SLI at 1680x res with high settings would typically net you around 70% performance increase - tho it might take some tweaking of the SLI profile to get you there.
