Same over here or was, its red diesel, petrol was similar price when we used to own our boat a few years back. As you say you cant use it in cars.

My usual oil supplier is quoting a current price of 68ppl for "red diesel". So about half the price of road diesel.

Petrol is generally more expensive, usually by about 20p, probably no other reason than they can charge more.

So whats the difference between this and road petrol?

It's Derv & has red dye in it although I think they are phasing the red dye out these days & putting tax on it. Used to be a good scam years ago but these days they are bang on it & take your motor off you when caught.

Do you know when they are actually doing this ?

On the farm here we have a massive tank of red diesel and nobody has said anything about when we go from red to white ! :o

Ah k.

From googling it doesnt look like we get it down here.

How hard would it be to change the colour of it with another dye?:p

Boats will no longer be able to use red deisel as of Sept next year. When i was in the marina last month there was a big thing about two more summers on low tax fuel so make the most of it.

There is no need now as it doesn't have the Dye in it & looks the same as Regular but as Old Bill is wise to it the risk is to high to make it worth using. Those that used Cherry now use Cooking Oil obtained from there local chippys & cook there books to how much they declare.
Allegedly :D

It's only boat users that are losing the duty free fuel, not farms.

HMRC have, as usual, gone out of their way to make the duty changes obvious. :D

Red Diesel has a chemical in it which you can't remove, this is one of the things that has caught out the people who " wash " red diesel.. so I imagine that the new white must have it aswell !

1000L, falls to below 66 at 2000+ :)

Sounds cheap to me ! I'm pretty sure we paid 70ppl mebe the other day, will ask dad when he gets back

Ooops I'm getting confused again !

I read somewhere that red diesel was going to be " No Longer Available " and that it would be replaced with white diesel, which farmers could claim the V.A.T Back ? or was it duty ?:p

The red has a different specific mavity to regular duty paid diesel, that's what the fuel stops check for.

Erm, that may well have been me passing on what i'd read last year on another site about fuel duty for different users being changed/revoked. oops! :D

There isn't actually going to be a "new" white for boat usage, just full duty road fuel. (even though they don't use the roads, can't have cheap canal haulage getting popular can we!)

When I was selling tractors and had an agricultural contracting business back in 2004 Red Diesel was 19p a litre, road fuel at the time was about 85-90p a litre.

The duty was then increased to about 3p a litre and all the farmers were up in arms about it because it went just over 20p!

During busy periods we would use 1500L in about a week, about £300 worth. The same now would be £1020. No wonder a lot of contractors, me included, have packed it in and food prices have gone up.

One thought that crossed my mind the other day - can you use duty free fuels for trackdays and motorsport?

I reckon people should start using red diesel as a protest against stupid rises.

It wasn't so long ago it went above the pound mark, now it's up about 15p in a matter of months.
