i currently have the following

1 x 120mm fan front intake
1 x 120mm fan bottom intake
2 x 140mm fan side intake
2 x 140mm fan top exhaust
rear is taken by 120mm fan and rad from the cpu watercooler.

is this too many fans and if not are they all installed in the correct manner

I find the more fans you have (RPM depending) the more audible the are & that's where the problem will be for me ! As long as they are quiet & set right (positive air pressures) then I see no problem.

You could always turn some off to see if your temps change then you know you can live without one or two ?

i have a xigmatek midgard case and the fans came with the case, just curious and no def no temps at all case temp is approx 22c-24c

Do some actual testing. Remove one fan at a time and use a application (cpu, gpu) to monitor temps @ idle and load. If theres little difference between having four case fans and two, well theres no need for the extras.

It's too many when you're either not seeing any real or useful temp improvements or the noise is getting silly imo.

As for whether yours are installed in the correct manner, it's up to you to find out by experimenting I guess :)
Start with the side ones and see if intake, exhaust or none at all works best. Then see whether the bottom intake makes any useful difference. Lose the ones you don't need.

Front and top are fine, though you may not even need two at the top. It's up to you.
Is the rad intake or exhaust? Again, experiment to see which works best.
I'd imagine that having the rad on intake would work better given your top fan situation.

i have the rad as exhaust for obv reasons. would using the rad as an intake a sensible choice i wouldnt have thought that but hey i can gice it a go

Ymmv :)

Theory would say that it'll bring in cool air to the rad and the top fans would exhaust the warm air that comes out of it. As it is now, it'll be pulling warmed air from the case through the rad.

May not make much difference either way...

Personally, any case I've had with a bottom intake I've disabled as it's just acted like a hoover. From the looks of it, you may well have mad positive air pressure inside the case anyway with 2x140s exhausting but 6 fans on intake. Better than chucking fans at the problem is decent airflow through the case. I've seen cases with 5x120 fans do worse than cases with 2x120 properly placed. Remember, your PSU also acts as an exhaust, as does your gfx card if you have a cooler that sucks in the case and exhausts out the back. Ideally, you want clean airflow through the case obstructed by as few components like cables as possible with slightly positive pressure to avoid drawing dust in through seams, and looking at your case, you should be able to do that quite easily.
What I would start with:
The fan next to the CPU cooler, you'll need that, just make sure your CPU fan and exhaust fan are blowing the same way. Obvious, but some people, special people, get confused by that one :)
The PSU looks like it's acting like it's own private air circuit intaking from the bottom of the case, so we can ignore that, just watch it for gumpf and dirt.
Your gfx card could well be acting like it's own little thermal barrier, dividing the case in two, which could help things. Unless it is some massive beast or overclocked screamer, you should be able to do without that bottom intake. Having just the gfx fan will create negative pressure in the bottom of the case anyway and draw air in, mostly from that side fan next to the drives as the bottom of the case by it's nature will be partially obstructed. A fan sat there actively drawing in from the bottom could well just be sucking dust in and firing at your card anyway. Where are the 2x140mm side intakes? I assume one next to the HD rack, and the other on the door? Is the one on the door above or below the gfx card?
I would aim to imagine your case as two halves, and have clean flow through each section. 1x140mm intake up top/front with the rear CPU exhaust acting as exit, with hopefully a clear run through over RAM/VRMs/CPU cooler to exhaust. Then the bottom of the case with another fan (1x140 if it goes) acting as intake beside the drive racks and the gpu fan acting as exit with the bottom vent taking any excess positive pressure out. That should keep things running pretty cool and quiet unless, as mentioned, you overclock a lot, your gfx card is a monster, or you have 5xHDs in the racks :)
But experiment a bit to see what works best. Just remember that 140mm fans tend to move as much or more air than 120s, just quieter, and imagine how rough a trip water would have flowing through your case if you were to drown it. Airflow behaves much the same way.
