How much is too much?

each to their own, i went from 187hp to 50hp and thought it was great fun, okay it was an old swift so light and nimble with steel wheels, but it was fun on any road under 70mph and did more overtaking than you would imagine and safe overtakes aswell, stepping up to a 67hp 107 was nice and still as fun and did all the same as the swift but was better on motorways, for a 1ltr city car, it sure had no problem me dropping to 3rd at like 50mph to overtake in slow traffic, pulled surprisingly well.

There is literally 0% chance of you being able to do loads of "safe" overtakes at anything like 50mph in a 107, it's glacier slow. Well, perhaps where you are you're driving alongside a load of mobility scooters...

not at all and at the time i was at my home in devon, i was able to overtake a car and a full size truck no problem, but im not one of these that will just overtake at random, i dont drive like that anymore, but i was like it in my corolla, but that car being what it was gave too much encouragement to overtake whenever because it was possible, i dont have the bottle to do the overtakes i use to, so i only take it safe and with cars like the 107, you obviously need a good run up to pull it off, i never hit 6000rpm in that car to overtake as i didnt need to rag it like youd think..

people are just too use to lots of power and have no appreciation for small powered cars because they try to drive them like more powerful cars

When I had my 55HP Polo I could only overtake cars which were doing 50~MPH in a small handfull of places, and I had to plan it well in advance so I could get a good run up... Pioneer2000 has a point.

Don't think it really matters how much power you have in terms of overtaking because if you know the capabilities of the car you plan and make your overtakes accordingly. Having said that, I find it much less stressful driving a more powerful car. Not sure why. Maybe its just because I enjoy it more!

The VW group cars I drove were 2002, 2002, 2001 and 2003. What you described didn't work at all in them.
My '03 Octy does it.

Morons overtaking on a bend is completely different from someone using their faster car to dispatch an overtake faster in appropriate conditions
But not so different from morons thinking they can overtake faster and taking more chances with smaller safety margins, just because they think having a more powerful vehicle guarantees success...

Honestly I prefer driving a car that has more power than I would normally use. Having to wring your cars neck half to death to safely overtake isn't a great feeling. It's nice to be able to swiftly float past in the middle of the revs.

Not all low powered cars act the same, I overtake just fine in my 2008, I have overtaken just fine in all my low powered cars, I don’t need to wait till stupid timings to overtake, I plan them.

Only thing I would say is having more power like stating above is less stressful, mean okay on the T sport Toyota you need to get on Cam for best performance, but so eager to drive normally so having 160hp-200hp put through the wheels is and will be nice, that is unless you get a light car, my MGF was very eager for a 118hp car because they are fairly lift and mid engine, those sort of cars are best for low powered engines if you want fun and good overtaking

These days, my thoughts are as follows:

Minimum - 170bhp NA/150bhp turbo.
Desirable - 200-250bhp
Ideal - 250-320bhp
Excessive - 320bhp+
