How Much Memory Can Vista See?

Apologies if this is the wrong forum but this seems the most logical.

So, I am looking around to see if i can replace my aging laptop with something I could do most of may work on. I see that there is the choice of 4Gb memory offered by Dell. Can 32bit Vista tal;k to all that much or would I need 64bit Windows?

Thanks guys. The laptops I was looking at are in the Dell Outlet and there are some with 4MB so I wanted to know what version of Vista is needed.

Anyone know if one can get a 64 bit Vista disk from Microsoft as an exchange for a 32 bit version just in case Dell only supply 32 bit?
