How much money do you set aside each month for car repairs?

Just interested in finding out how much people plan for upcomming problems with their cars. Just to be clear I mean things like repairs, MOT, and servicing (exclude insurance, tax + fuel).

For me:

Car: 2006 Mondeo Ghia 2.0TDCi 130
Money Set Aside (per month): £60

I find that amount generally covers me for general upkeep (tyres, service, tax). I do struggle a bit if a large bill comes in, normally resulting to digging into my other money.

How prepared do you make yourself for your car bills? I'm interested really in just finding out the costs of different makes/models/ages of cars...

EDIT:

so reading through the replies I guess my question wasn't very well formed!

The basic question is meant to be something along the lines of, do you prepare for your car bills? (that includes saying, yes, I have savings which cover that). And secondly, what are your yearly running costs roughly?

Obviously make of car, year and miles is useful extra info.

Back when I first had a car I never prepared for ANYTHING, I mean anything at all, including MOT, tax, servicing. I used to just pay for it on the fly, because I lived at home and had only a small amount of bills, but it still used to catch me out (due to my lack of financial planning). Now though I have specific car savings, future house savings and current account. If a massive bill came up I would dip into other money resources and savings, but I specifically only set aside £720 a year to cover MOT, service, tax and general wear and tare.

Octavia 1.9 SLX tdi 2000.

£100 a month set aside for repairs. Actual repair costs have exceeded this consistently.

I intend to go much newer and Japanese or Korean ASAP.

you kind of need mileage as well, otherwise it doesn't make much sense relatively :)

for me:

Car: 2011 MX-5 Roadster Coupe Sport Tech
Money Set Aside (per month): £125
Montly Milage: ~1300

Its more than i need to put away by a fare amount but covers any nasty surprises and helps saving for a replacement :)

Fiat Grande Punto - 1.9 multjet

£0 a month...

We either have savings or a 0% credit card to cover any problems...had the car 1 and a bit yeas and no such problems yet!

Saying that now done 25k since its last service, so problems may start to arise!

Those who set nothing aside then; is this because your car never goes wrong/you don't MOT/Tax/Service it? Or do you just handle these things as and when? With mine, for example, my MOT and tax are due in the same month and insurance the month after that. So if I don't set money aside it could potentially really hurt me financially for the remainder of that month.

If I also run into a big repair job (luckily nothing too major so far) I wouldn't like to be unprepared for it.

I guess the question is irrelevant for all the massive earners, but say for example Car tax and MOT is due same month and MOT says you need four new tyres and you also have some other problem which needs rectifying, suddenly there's a six or seven hundred pound bill looming.

I pay ~£35/month for a fixed price service plan and then stick £75/month in to a savings account. The savings account covers regular bits like tyres, insurance (done as a single payment), MOT and other consumables. The surplus builds up now & again to give a kitty to cover any unexpected bills.

I don't set anything aside as such but I'm generally quite frugal so if need be I have enough to hand to cover anything that needs doing.

None specifically, but I have never really budgetted like that, I know I will have enough to address most issues. I do have a savings account I move money into most months, but there is no set amount, although I do have an amount I 'like' to save when I can ...in anycase that covers car expenses among other things.

I don't set anything aside, if it breaks I fix it. Worst case is it's beyond economical repair and I'll scrap it and buy something else.

Having said that I live within my means, I always maintain a healthy positive balance in my bank account to cover any unforeseen costs which life may throw at me, along with a zero-balance credit card to tide me over if I really end up in the ****

The 335i is under warranty and with the 530i I just pay the bills as and when. Even when in one month it had a clutch and 4 tyres it was only just over a grand.

When I was at university I kept a grand aside for bills for it.
