Son #1 has a 3D printer on his Christmas list. What sort of money do you need to spend on an ok setup? I realise there will be wide range of prices and 'ok setup' is a matter of opinion but could anyone point me in the direction of some models to do some reading on?

Ender 3 V2 neo should be sub £200 on black Friday deals. There is very little assembly compared to previous models too which is a plus.
Edit: in fact it already is when bought direct from creality site.

Thanks. Is anything on the cheaper end worth getting?

Ender 3 is a great shout for that plug and play / learner experience. A lot of the cheaper stuff you will just end up spending more money upgrading and making it any good. The ender 3 is simply a great entry level / mid range printer and is why it gets recommended so much :)

Thanks. I figured as much. There has to be some sort of minimum level spend to avoid buying crud. It's probably a bit pricy as a present for the little one who has just decided on a whim that he wants a 3D printer - as cool as they are!

I've seen the Spark 3D SP1 for about £130. it's an ender 3 clone and has BL touch which will make life easier.
It's about as cheap as they get.
the 3 Neo is about 250, I wouldn't be surprised to see them under 200. that's a good option as well.

Jakes place has the Anycubic Kobra 2 Neo for 143 which is mad. another ender 3 clone with auto bed levelling.

it really comes down to how much you want to spend, money and time. also how much it'll be their toy and how much it'll be yours.

I'm fairly new to owning a 3D printer and did a lot of reading on the best bang for buck etc. Ultimately, I decided there's too much fiddling/constant messing about with the Enders and ended up buying a Sovol SV06 instead.

It took about 15 minutes to build, 10 minutes to setup and I've been printing on it several times a week for the past 6 months without adjusting anything. Print quality is great, easy to use and just no fuss in my experience.

They've not long released the SV07 which looks like a reasonable upgrade

pretty much all the fiddling with enders is optional.
everyone you see complaining about it doesn't actually have one.

Elegoo Neptune 3 Pro got it for £180 assembly takes half an hour and you can be printing within an hour. Works out the box with very little adjustment and there is room for improving it when you get familiar with it later.
