On the wagon, sorta
currently have a 8800GT that is withering away so i may be forced to purchase a new card and money is tight, real tight so im woundering how much of a downgrade it would be, i game 1680x1050?

If you sold your 8800 GT to buy a new 3870 you would probably only make a tenner. You'd probably only make £20 buying a 2nd hand 3870...

No what it is is my cooler was taken off to clean it but somehow the screw on the back was rounded so now it wont fasten in and obviously gigabyte would notice this so there go's the rma.
But anyway the card is experiencing issues, i unpluged my computer to decorate my computer room which now looks lovely but on setting up my pc again i noticed an issue with the screen, flickering lines on certain areas of the screen the full horizontal width in clumps of about 10mm up to about 30mm and when the mouse cursor moved through them that area had extreme latency and traces off of the moving object, a little like a screen with a 100ms response time. After the monitor was on for a little while i presume warmed up the problem slowly dissapeard i then noticed if i powerd down the monitor for a second so it discharged its power then switched it back on the problem would reapear though not for aslong as if it had been off all night. With the nonitor allmost brand new i tyed it with a differant machine ready to send it back but the problem disapeard so i started checking other componants.
After putting the graphics card in another machine the problem followed it now ive reinstalled the drivers up the fan speed and downclocked the ram and GPU but it didnt make a differance, funny thing is with the same card while it was experiencing these issues i could play hours of COD4 without a hitch, i even reformatted the pc and reinstalled vista but the problem persisted, now all of a sudden its gone, 5 days in and i got a glimmer of a slight reocurance a day ago with faint flickering lines but they dissapeard pretty soon afterwords while all the time gaming has been fine. Funny thing is if say the flickering was in the top half of the screen it would dissapear instantly if i opend up a internet page and it filled the top right quarter of the screen, made no differance if it occupied thre top left, it would remain regardless but if the page occupied the top right it would dissapear but when you moved it out of the top right it would appear again instantly.
Obviously im preparing my self fo rthe worst and getting ready to buy a new card but i wasnt ready to upgrade so money is a little tight, so a 3870 is looking appealing im just not sure how much of a downgrade it would be. idealy i would like to be buying a 512MB GTS which will atleast be somewhat of an upgrade for me having to spend money i dont want to but times are hard and driving tests are expensive.
