How much of a performance upgrade will I really get?

Hi guys, merry xmas and other season greetings to you guys. Recently just purchased a 24" screen and a new graphics card as a treat for landing myself a new job this year :D.

Anyway, I was wondering, from someone who has a dramatic upgrade similar to mine, i'm going from a Radeon HD 5830, to a MSI Radeon R9 280.
I am also running a AMD FX-6300 too, was wondering how much of a performance upgrade I should expect? I play WoW and the settings i use are usually set to High.

The R9 280 is a good card, a large chunk faster than the 5830 - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1062?vs=1332

Well not large, MASSIVE! :D
However, WOW is very much a CPU bound game, so you'll just have to wait and see :)
Is your FX 6300 overclocked? Do you have a CPU heatsink and decent motherboard? What are the rest of your specs?
 
I have the same card, a Radeon HD 5830 and I have a 970 waiting for me to get my hands on tomorrow!

the rest of my specs are a I7 950 @ 4ghz, 6GB of ram, 250GB Samsung evo 840.

as WoW is more CPU intensive you might want to get a better CPU cooler and try some overclocking.

by default my CPU is 3ghz speed so to save on pennies I decided to OC the CPU and get a new GPU. I cant comment on the increase as I don't have the card in my PC yet lol

It is not overclocked, it was, but i somehow managed to set it back to its factory settings by mistake haha.

My specs are

CPU: FX 6300 (not OC, but i want to learn how to do so)
CPU cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro V2 CPU Cooler (LN28632 if you want to look it up on scan)
MB:Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P (LN52817)
HDD: Some standard normal 1gig HDD.
 
Yep you should be able to overclock on that cooler and motherboard, good job

You could head over to the CPU subforum, there's a few guides there on how to overclock :) It should make a difference, not OC'ing an FX is bad :( Do it!
 
@ED209 haha my card is currently out of stock :( but I hope I get it soon :D. I also play League of Legends, but that is also CPU intensive, I should learn how to OC a CPU. Its something I never took time to do. Does anyone have some good guides by any chance?
 
Replied same time as you @shivy011, thanks bud I will head over there and have a look. Haha I bought it overclocked too shouldn't of messed with it :).

I play a lot of FPS games, used to play wow a long time ago but then stopped.

I am changing the GPU to get more steady FPS as if I turn everything down in the drivers then I can increase fps but I have got to the point where I think its time to retire the card as its 4 years old now
 
Yeah, with the new games coming out, the 5830 is starting to let me know that its time is up, the card was brilliant for its time, really happy it lasted me 4 years or so too, hope the new card lasts me just as long. Damn, that card looks super good, had compared it to the 5830 with the http://www.anandtech.com/ website. You're in a for a treat haha.
