How much of an upgrade is a I7 920 over a q6600

Ill be using it along side a 580gtx at 1920 x 1200 res I'm looking to upgrade basically my system in sig as its showing its age on arma 3 (the gpu should say 460gtx 1gig upgraded the 8800gtx a while ago) I've already got a 580gtx sat here ready to go in my system.

I've been offered
intel core i7 lga 1366 920 2.67ghz D0
ex58-ud3r (rev 1.6/1.7) fj bios will be boxed with backplate etc, no fans ever run off the mb headers
corsair 6gb 3x2gb dominator ddr3 2000mhz with fan (the stuff with the red heatsinks)boxed

will this cpu, ram and motherboard alongside a 580gtx get me good playable frames with a bit of eye candy turned on.

My q6600 and 460gtx combo is all over the place with mainly standard settings. No AA or Post processing turned on.

That will be a nice upgrade, the 920's are great cpu's. A 4ghz oc is practically a given on them, will make for a very potent gaming rig. Had one prior to the spec in sig, better cpu tbh.

A stock clock i7 920 (with HT disabled) is a little bit faster than a Q6600 at 3.6GHz...and if you factor in that the i7 920 can overclocked from 2.66GHz to at least 4.0GHz, you would see quite a huge gain...but of course, not as much as to a SB or IB i5/i7.

Would a corsair A50 cooler be ok for it ? On bit of a budget. I've got the above bundle for £140.

So the above build with a 580gtx will see me good and I wont of wished i'd held out for a 2500k build.

Should do ok with it, they can run hot. But not as much as an ivybridge. The sandy and ivybridge i5 models will clock higher, (sandy runs cooler than ivy). With the hyperthreading that the i7 920 has, in some tasks and games it gives an advantage over the non hyperthreaded i5 ivy and sb chips. My minimum frames in bf3 have suffered a slight drop by switching from the hyperthreaded i7 920 @4.2ghz to the 3570k, even though the 3570k is clocked 300mhz higher.

Thank you setter, think ill take the guy up on the offer then unless anyone thinks it wont be much of an upgrade and can offer his view as well has you have.

I also know who to pm for OC setting, not Overclocked many of the new platforms. With summer round the corner. I wont be going to high The Q6600 kicks out enough heat as it is :d

What do you think of the cooler corsair A50, will it do a decent enough job of cooling the chip or should I look out for something better. ?

It looks pretty good for a budget cooler. On mine i used a thermalright ultra extreme 120, an excellent cooler that can be bought very cheaply secondhand. This is similair to it.

Theres the more expensive model with 6 heatpipes that can take 140mm fans.

If you could manage to source one of the early ultra 120's, it would be a fantastic choice. They sell for little over a tenner now. If you have members market access, try in there.

As setter says, a nice upgrade, still using my i7 920 overclocked at 4.2ghz and it still kicks butt and still a few years left in it yet. ;)

I went from a q6600 to a 920 and glad i did, even though my 920 is stock and on speedstep it still flies along and a lot quicker than my q6600.

got a h100 with push/pull on my 920 and at idle it sits at 28c.

id say it depends on price at end of day

for what you can pick up a i2500k for second hand id probably go with that over a 920

a 920 is about same as a phenom 2 quad at 3.6-7 and a q6600 @ 3.67 at stock

still using a i7 920 @ 3.8GHz - way faster than the q6600 @ 3.2GHz that I had before it

what ram settings are you using?

p.s. I went from a Q6600 to a 920. Overclocked to 3.6GHz at the moment. I'm not sure if my ram timings are too slack or not though.
