How much power does a x800gto2 use and can I get away with a different(passive)cooler

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
?

I'm planning to use one in a media centre PC, and the stock cooler is hitting my southbridge cooler.

Can I get away with using a passive cooler, and how much heat do these cards kick out?

Have you done the bios hack to it that makes it into an x850? (i had one and this was the coolest thing ever 3 years ago). If so id get a different shape active cooler as mine pushed 95 degrees with the case open (in winter too!) whith this. If not you might be able to get away with it with very good air flow over the passive cooler but i really wouldnt be too trusting that particular card.

Oh also about the power requirements, i used an unbranded 300w psu (sin!) on it which didnt pose any problems (i think). As the card goes its not power hungry, it just makes a lot of heat

I haven't done the 16 pipe mod, I think mine was one of the laser cut ones... I was planning on using an Accelero S2, but I have a feeling it's gonna be a real squeeze!

Anyway, I'll be mostly using this for 2d, but I also have a 7800GT which may give off less heat? If not I may keep an eye open for something like a 7300 or x1300 as it seems silly using a card which if good at 3d (and gives off lots of heat) in something that is mainly playing back video clips.

Ah it could be ok to use the Accelero S2 (havnt got one but anything was an improvement to the stock coolers on them). As for the 7800gt im still running one (its getting replaced towards the end of the summer) and it does give off less heat (max temps are around 65ish and usual temp is about 50ish) which is a bit lower than the x800 but the cooler is still pretty average.

I would recommend the safety net of one of those 2 over a x1300 (personally) as i have the x1300 in my laptop and it does struggle abit beyond internet surfing :( (dvd playback was so average at uni)
