So i have recently installed Windows 7 and sorted out a old ladys pc and this is the first time i have done it and she has asked me to give her an invoice of how much it costs.....
Now i have never done this before and i dont want to rip her off....So basically when you do this type of thing for people how much do you charge.

Ok i am probs gonna do it for about £10.......As she seems inclined to give me money for turning it on. Ok i will stick AVG Free on i think
Cheers guys

at work we charge £55+vat if they provide drivers or £65+vat if we have to find them, we also use avg for a free antivirus as it doesnt seem very system hungry.

but for a person doing it as a favour i would say £10-£20 seems reasonable, but if you are not doing it as a business then do it for free or just say 'its ok' and if she chooses to make a donation then the amount is then up to her.

its always difficult doing things for friends and family, i dont charge...a customer i would have charged £50 thats my hourly rate, even though it might take longer to load the actual time spent in front of the PC would be far less than that.

I dont know her, She put an advert up on the notice board in the lobby and i saw it and enquired to the problem.........AVG Free doesnt run out does it?

I'm always doing this for family, friends and friends of friends. I don't charge for family, friends i let them decide and others I charge £30 a shot but that includes installing Windows, Drivers and Apps I also clean Windows up a bit. Although it's not hard work it is time consuming and boring and if you start charging randoms £10 word will get round and you'll soon get sick of it.

As long as it's a Genuine install of Windows always use MS Security Essentials it's free, From MS and pretty good, why look else where :)

Just be wary of not charging or only doing it for pennies.
I did a few odd bits for a friends dad one time, installed a printer and at the end accepted a tenner for a few beers that evening.

Next week got a phonecall after he'd ballsed something up, spent 6 hours fixing the problem and he only wanted to bung me a few quid for doing it.

Then another phone call.... and another.....

I either charge an hourly rate now or just don't do it at all.

Just to echo what Nathan said, Once you do some ones PC they will expect free Tech support and tbh unless you have nothing better to do or are making some money it's really not worth the headaches.

Well the general amount seems to be £20 but i ended up just clearing up her pc and removing amazing amounts of viruses e.t.c and didnt install windows 7 so i think £10-£15 seems fine + i have been there around 5 times and for hours as she is constantly asking questions lol
