I'm doing a bit of re-design work on the company I work for's website, I'm doing the job outside the company so I need to come up with an hourly rate but I don't really know how much to charge for doing this sort of thing. The company is quite a large post production company if that makes a difference. For re-designing the site I mainly just need to change the colours, images, update all the text (will be provided for me), I also need to change the layout on a few pages.

What would you say is a fair rate for doing that sort of thing, I don't want to rip them off because I want to do work for them again in future.

Wouldn't it be better for you, and for them in actual fact.. To just say a price for the whole project?.. Like a figure which you can say is fair for all the time/effort it will take you, to create the finished result.

How good are you?

Some people charge £10 per hour some charge £100 per hour.

I've decided to charge them £15 an hour with an estimate of 10-20 hours of work depending on how demanding they are. It's good to keep these guys sweet though because they will help me in my future career.

I'm assuming this is the first time you've done something like this... So really think of the outcome figure you would like to earn from the project as a whole then divide that by how many hours you think it will take. If it's lower than £10/ph then the project cost is too low so you should raise it.

Always remember though that underselling yourself is worse than overselling yourself.

Aye. If you start off with underselling it's hard to raise prices, but it's always easy to start high and decrease if necessary.

And anyway - if you don't ask, you don't get.
