I'm thinking about a new ATI card in the near future, probably a 4870 when they get to about £180. I'm not changing my monitor anytime soon (20"), so will 512Mb VRAM be ebough?

Or should I wait for the 1Gb cards?

Just had a another thought, if I get a 1080P TV, will this res trash a 512Mb card?

I usually play games about 9 months out of date. :p

Judging by the reviews so far the 512mb HD4870 is holding its own against the 1gb GTX 280.

One review in particular that interests me if the firingsquad review where they show that with 8x AA applied in most cases the HD4870 (512mb model) is actually faster than the GTX280 at most resolutions.

In your position I would wait for the 1gb cards to come out to see how much more expensive they are than the 512mb equivilant. If there isn't much in it then get the 1gb card, if the price difference is quite large then save your money and get the 512mb card.

512mb does fine with 16xAF and 8xAA on all games I've tried it with on my 4850....except Crysis but who cares about that :p more vram won't make much of a difference in that game anyway

512 will be fine for that res, there is loads of questions about this in the existing threads.

Next question, even higher resolutions are available with 512MB on the 4000 series cards than on the NV cards because of better compression algorithms

Thanks fellas, looks like 512Mb is fine for my relatively low res's. Cost will hopefully not be a problem (I hope a 1Gb wouldn't be much more than £20 more, not a big deal) but time is maybe more of a factor :) I've waited for donkeys years for a 'bang for buck' card, I'm still running an X1900XT!
