How much will the CAS Latency affect workflow?

Hi guys,

Building a new workstation on the x99 platform, going with the 5820k and probably the Asus x99-pro.

I am a student so I'm trying to save money on this build without compromising stability, final piece I would be needing is the ram it's down between the Team elite CAS 16 and some kingston CAS 12 the 12 is £40 more though and is not low profile which may be a problem as I intend to stick a nice big silent heatsink on later, probably a noctua.

System will be used for 3D programs such as 3DSMax, Maya, zBrush, mudbox, photoshop work and various other applications an heavy applications and game engines.

I know the CAS latency can affect render times but how much of a performance hit would I take with the higher CAS rate?

Cheers, Stephen

You can't just judge RAM by it's timings, you have to factor in the memory frequency for instance:a CAS of 7 at 1066mhz is worse than a CAS of 10 at 1600mhz, generally speaking.

The higher frequency you go the higher the latency to accompany, I'm not familiar with the workings of all of the software you're planning on using but you have a tradeoff of higher bandwidth or lower latency but honestly you would not see a measureable difference(or any at all) between your two kits in my opinion.

Forgot got to mention both kits are running at 2400mhz, so technically speaking the kingston CAS 12 is probably the better option but it sounds like in terms of productivity the there shouldn't really be any noticeable performance drop.

I think I'll go for the cheaper ram then, I shouldn't have any constraints in terms of cooler then.

Thanks for the info and fast replies guys
