To upgrade my socket 775 system?

I have a Q6600, Asus P5Q Pro Turbo, 4GB Ram and a 6870.

I was wondering how much would I need to spend to get a decent upgrade of the cpu mobo and ram?

Or would I be better off just upgrading the 6870?

This is for a gaming pc btw.

Could I get a decent cpu/mobo/ram for less than £300?

It needs to be better than the setup I have now but I don't need the best of the best, I just game at 1080p.

Thanks

The i5K is on offer this week.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £167.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £89.99
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV38G160C9K) £34.99
Total : £292.97 (includes shipping : FREE).

You could save £5 on the RAM but I've stuck with a reputable brand (faster kit HERE for a little more). The i5K can be overclocked, the Z77 mobo has lucidmvp which uses the improved IGP in the ivybridge i5K to boost your 6870.

Is it possible to go cheaper while still being a great upgrade from my current system?

Thanks triggerthat, would a core i3 setup be a lot slower than what you've specced?

Wow, just noticed you've specced identically.

If you haven't overclocked your Q6600, then your option would be to try that with a 670 / 7950. But overclocking first just to see if you get some improvement.

Else, IMO, your option would be to jump straight into a 3570K, or a 2500K if you can find one for cheap (£150 or less).

£170 - 3570K.
or £125 - 2500K (second hand).
£80 - P8Z77-V LX2 / GA-Z77-D3H.
£30 - 8GB 1600MHz RAM.

You'd end up swapping the i3 for a i5 later on, so really you'd be wasting your money. If you can chuck in a tenner to get the i5, then that's your best option.

Your CPU vs the Ivy i3

There is an i3 with the improved HD4000 IGP (the 3240) but the 3220 is ok. The IGP is also used by quicksync to help with encoding not just by lucidMVP to boost the GPU. Depends if you want to pay a little more for the better IGP

Is there a real need to have as much as 8gb of ram?

Last time I upgraded I remember 4GB was the most reccomended amount.

We are assuming you have the 64bit version of windows. 32 bit has a 4GB cap on the RAM. 8GB is the sweet spot for gaming, you still have a couple of RAM slots spare to add another kit to upgrade to 16GB to help with video encoding etc if you desired

You going to use your old cooler?

Im planning a almost identical upgrade is the Gigabyte Z77-D3H a good board? i was going for the Asrock Z77 extreme4 for around £20 more, and the ram is a whole £1 cheaper than the black dragon and it has better timings....

Ah would like a new cooler aswell, mine is loud and is not a pwm so I have it wired up to my fan controller which isn't ideal. Also doesn't seem to cool all that well.

Its an Asus Silent Square Pro.

Can I be specced a hsf, nothing too fancy about £30 tops.

Thanks guys merry christmas.
